The Beta Mu Review Pi Kappa Alpha • University of Texas • Fall 2013 Texas Pikes Reaching Elite Fraternity Status at U.T. G Chapter Excels in All Areas of Fraternity Life reetings, brothers. The Beta Mu Chapter has enjoyed a busy and productive fall semester. Thirty-five new members were initiated on December 8, bringing the active membership to 165 brothers. For the previous semester, our overall membership GPA was 3.2, ranking our men eighth of the 23 IFC fraternities at Texas. Parents' Weekend Successful, Philanthropy a Priority for Actives In September, the fraternity hosted its annual Parents' Weekend at the chapter house, which included dinner remarks by Stratton Borchers '07. Stratton, now with ConocoPhillips in energy trading in Houston, shared remembrances of Pike days and related how the founders' vision has impacted him and will impact the men in the chapter today. In October, Pikes participated in the philanthropic Red Bull Chariot Race sponsored by the Interfraternity Council to raise awareness for prostate cancer. Beta Mu Traditions Still Carried On, New Officers Elected In November, Beta Mu built and held our 40th annual Swamp party. This jungle-themed party is one of the U.T. Greek System's largest and most recognizable functions. We also held our elections and a cadre of new officers were appointed, and took office after Thanksgiving. I am honored to serve as the new president of the chapter for the year ahead. Tailgates a Favorite Among All, Actives Involved in Texas Cowboys and Silver Spurs Throughout the fall, Beta Mu has continued a multi-year tradition of Pike Texas Cowboys are Newman Dalton Hardy '13 (kneeling), Matthew Lillard '11, Jeff Daugherty '10, Kyle Shaffer '11, Chandler Abbott '10 and Andrew Young '10. hosting pre-football tailgates, drawing Pikes, family, and friends to cheer on the Longhorns. Pike is well represented in Texas Cowboys and Silver Spurs. Pikes currently hold the treasurer and secretary offices in Silver Spurs, and a Pike is the outgoing social chairman of Texas Cowboys. Continuing Education Program Made Possible by Alumni The chapter's continuing education program hosted a finance and accounting career discussion session in November for the undergraduates at the house. The chapter is grateful to Austin-based alumnus banker Keith Griffith '66, small business owner and former investment banker Ken Womack '81 and CPA Kyle Parks '90 for leading the session. We are grateful to Beta Mu alumni for your ongoing support and were pleased to join summer alumni gatherings in Austin, Dallas and Houston. Beta Mu is well into its 10th decade at the University of Texas at Austin. There has never been a time to have more pride in being an active member or an alumnus of Pike Beta Mu Chapter. We encourage alumni and friends to visit when in Austin. Yours in phi phi ka, Chandler Abbott '10 Chapter President (310) 924-1312 abbottchandler@gmail.com Chris Herrington '09 (center) received Beta Mu's new Frederick Southgate Taylor Award for outstanding service by a graduating Pike senior.
