Building Our Future G Don Thompson '66 Shares His Indiana Gamma Experience raduating from high school is a milestone in anyone's life, but for Don Thompson '66 it was just the beginning of his next journey. "I pledged Phi Delta Theta the night I graduated high school. My brother, Chuck '61, was a Phi Delt at Butler, as well as my high school tennis, basketball, and baseball coaches. I have stayed active in Phi Delta Theta because I made so many life long friends. Like the poem, To College Brothers, says, 'The friends of my Phi Delt days, are the friends that I love the best!'" Don says he has tried to live every day by the bond of friendship, sound learning, and moral rectitude. "I am always pleased to read about achievements of famous alumni of Phi Delta Theta. Whenever I wear my Phi Delt hat, I get compliments from friends and strangers on how great the chapters were at their universities. I am still proud to be a Phi!" While earning his bachelor's degree from the School of Liberal Arts, Dan served as the chaplain, assistant treasurer, and treasurer. "I have so many special memories; Chapter room meetings and initiations were very important activities and special to most of us. Nearly a dozen of us went to Washington, D.C., to attend the funeral of JFK and stayed at the Maryland Alpha house. Of course, how could any of us forget the infamous State Day of 1964." John L. Yeager '59 In memory of Professor Edgar L. Yeager He acknowledges the pivotal role Indiana Gamma played in his life. "I learned how to respect the other Brothers and listen to opinions of others. As pledges we learned to help each other through some very unusual activities. As actives we became teachers for the younger brothers. Phi Delta Theta gave me confidence that I could do much more than I thought I could do. Phi Delta Theta helped make me a man." Don returned to Butler for his pledge class' Golden Legion awards. "The house is wonderful and the restoration is gorgeous. The young Brothers of Indiana Gamma were very friendly and welcoming. We loved being able to share some of our history of the house with them. The Chapter is in fine shape. The local alumni have done a fantastic job in resurrecting the house." Since moving to Phoenix, Don has helped form an alumni club, which has more than 1,200 alumni. "We have hosted the international convention three times and have been chosen the most outstanding alumni club in the Fraternity four different times. I try to attend all the international conventions and will be at the Las Vegas convention in June 2014." "With the Internet, it's easy to track them down. Alumni should get involved with a local alumni club too. If there isn't one, start one. It's a great experience meeting Phis from all over the country. I found out that I taught with two Phi Delts for seven years before we all knew we were Brothers in the bond. Don retired from teaching after 36 years. He and his wife, Eden, live in Phoenix and have a daughter and two grandchildren. Don encourages all alumni to support Indiana Gamma.
