Page 24 - Rutherford Weekly JOHN WAYNE BARNES John Wayne " J . W . " Barnes, 73, of Mooresboro, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 29, 2013. A native of Cleveland County, he was born on November 14, 1939, a son of the Gilbert Barnes of Rutherfordton and the late Ezma Jolley Barnes. He retired from Duke Energy after 35 years of service and was a member of Prospect Baptist Church. Pop, as he was known by his family and many others, loved NASCAR Racing, sharing his beach house with his family, and traveling with his wife of 49 years, Teeny Barnes. These great loves he passed on to his son, Dennis Barnes and wife Tammy of Rutherfordton and his two grandsons, Jordan and Judson, who were his pride and treasures in life. He was so happy when spending time with his grandsons and his god-daughter, Stephanie, who Pop considered one of his own. He enjoyed life, laughter, and just having fun; he took this life with a lighter view, because he knew that the best was still to come, in Heaven with his Eternal Life. We will always remember all of these things he taught us as we know that we will one day join Pop for our Eternal Life in Heaven. In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by his wife, Denise Lynn Barnes. There are those who dwell on death so much that they fail to live. Instead of focusing on the end of our lives on this earth, we must put our sights on living today. Now, please don't misunderstand me, planning ahead is wise but forgetting to live while you are doing your planning is foolishness. The famous writer, Mark Twain, put this thought into words when he said, "The fear of death follows the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time." What fears about the future are we letting control us so much that we are not experiencing life at its fullest? I once knew a man who was a miser. His house was so full of stuff that you could barely walk from room to room. One day I questioned him on why he needed so much stuff and he replied, "I always want to be prepared." He was living in the fear of what might happen tomorrow that he had forgotten to live today. It is sad to say that when he died most of the "stuff" was tossed into a dumpster. Just remember this quote from the cartoonist, Allen Saunders, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." Live today!
