Even though it is hard to predict, usually flu activity begins in October and peaks in January or February in the U.S., but the flu season can continue into May. Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that is caused by a virus. Flu symptoms include cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, tiredness and sometimes a fever. Most people who get the flu will recover in a few days, but for some people, the flu can be deadly. There are people who are at higher risk if they do become sick with the flu, and they include those 65 of age and older; those with chronic health issues such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease; pregnant women; and young children. Complications of flu can include pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus and ear infections and worsening of conditions such as asthma and heart conditions that are already present. On average, 36,000 people a year die from flu and its complications. So, what are the best ways to prepare for the flu season and hopefully avoid getting the flu? First of all, get a flu shot. The Centers for Disease Control recommends a flu vaccine for everyone who is 6 months of age or older as the first and most important step in protecting against the flu. It is especially important for those in the high risk groups mentioned above as well as the people close to them to be vaccinated. Other ways to avoid getting the flu include washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs, and staying away from others who are sick. If you are sick, stay home to avoid infecting others. Flu vaccines are available in doctor's offices, pharmacies, health departments and even some schools. Please take advantage of the flu vaccine in order to protect yourself and others from getting the flu.
