PI DEUTERON CHAPTER OF PHI GAMMA DELTA AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS • FALL 2013 "Not for College Days Alone" The 2013 pledge class serenading the alumni. KEEPING FORWARD MOMENTUM Recruitment Success Latest Sign of Continued Improvement Pledge Class Size and Overall House Capacity Every fall brings a new school year and new challenges. Usually it involves getting improvement projects done on time or meeting tight budget constraints. This fall brought a unique – and positive – challenge: how to fit 32 pledges into the house. For the first time in recent memory, the Chapter House is at or very near capacity. At last count, 68 brothers and pledges are living at 1540 Louisiana this fall. Due to fire code restrictions and the elimination of Rooms 6 and 21 over ten years ago, our capacity is roughly 70 men. I have discussed before that Chapter break-even is roughly 50 men living in. Having an additional 18 over that level means almost $100,000 additional revenue per year. This opens up opportunities for the undergraduates, as well as for the House Corporation. Our sincere thanks to the Chapter leadership that made this past recruiting year so successful. Recruitment Efforts Already Underway The recruitment cycle at KU, much like basketball recruiting, never ends. With informal recruitment going on throughout the school year and formal recruitment occurring in the summer, when one cycle ends, the next begins. There have already been several outreaches for recommendations, but I wanted to make another plea for names of highly qualified young men. There is nothing more frustrating than to learn that a legacy is being recruited by another fraternity and Pi Deuteron doesn't know about him. Please send recommendations to KUFijiRecruitment@gmail.com. If you want to call a recommendation to the attention of the House Corporation, please send a note to pideuterongrads@gmail.com. Matt Moore '13 First Pi Deuteron Brother to Win Prestigious Wilkinson Award hen a chapter has been around for over 130 years, it is hard to do something that no one has ever done before, but that's exactly what Matt Moore '13 did this summer. Matt became the first Pi Deuteron winner of the Wilkinson Award, which goes to the most outstanding senior across all Phi Gamma Delta chapters. After a distinguished career at 1540 Louisiana, Matt is now at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Congratulations, Matt! W New Purple Legionnaire I am proud to announce that Pi Deuteron has a new Purple Legionnaire. Pledge brother Adam Ritchie '93 accepted the position several months ago and is already making a positive impact with the Chapter. Adam lives in Lawrence, which allows him easy and frequent access to the house. Adam builds upon his family's storied history of volunteerism with Pi Deuteron. The House Corporation and the BCA couldn't be happier to have Adam on board.
