Beta Tau Pursues Excellence Alumni Encouraged to Visit the Shelter Inside Join the Advisory Team 2 Brothers Recruit 35 New Members 3 Welcome, New Members 4 W e started our new year at the University of Nebraska with a full Shelter and much excitement, anticipation, and energy. The efforts of the recruitment chairmen brought 35 great new members, each anticipating the year ahead. As we greeted these young men in August, we looked forward to Beta Tau's bright future. The fraternity evolves and renews with the promise of exceptional pledges beginning their lives as Delt brothers and their lifelong commitment to the pursuit of excellence. We have encouraged the chapter to lead all fraternities in academics and to pursue opportunities for leadership in university organizations. I am confident that soon we will again have the Hugh Shields Award. Renovations Decrease Utilities Thank you for helping us create the best living environment of any fraternity on campus. Parents touring campus echoed that the Shelter is the gold standard for desirable features and location. The individually controlled heating and cooling units are much appreciated and decrease the cost of utilities. The state-of-the-art fire-suppression system assures that the men are safe and the facility is protected from destruction by fire. Landscaping Project in the Works Now that we have a beautiful new home inside, we've turned our attention to the outside. Alumni have met with two landscaping contractors at the Shelter who have provided a plan for sprucing up the grounds. The following are a few projects that are in progress to make the exterior of the Shelter match the interior. 1.A sprinkler system will be installed on the east side, as well as adequate water hookups. 2. The lawn will be replaced. 3. Plants will be placed on the east and south sides. 4. A tree in the back of the Shelter is nearly dead and will be removed and a large cottonwood tree that hangs over the roof will be trimmed. 5. Vines will be removed from the southeast corner. Support Our Undergraduate Brothers As president of the House Corporation, I have had the opportunity to meet the new pledges and many of their parents. I am impressed! I know you will be too when you get to know these brothers. Additional involvement of alumni would provide more energy to move Beta Tau toward a higher standard of excellence. Please think about volunteering to attend a dinner, join us for a House Corporation meeting, coordinate a luncheon, or pursue a special interest or topic with the undergraduates as a guest speaker. Beta Tau Responds to Dietary Needs I have been asked how Beta Tau addresses special dietary needs of our members at mealtime. I was pleased to learn that, like the dorms and a number of the other Greek organizations, the Shelter provides meals that meet the needs of a diabetic or someone who requires a dairy-free or gluten-free diet. Brothers Raise Money for Juvenile Diabetes Delta Tau Delta and the Juvenile Diabetes Relief Fund (JDRF) joined last year in the fraternity's first national philanthropic partnership. Beta Tau will focus their philanthropic efforts to support this cause. The goal of JDRF research is to improve the life of all of those affected by type 1 diabetes and to accelerate the pace and progress of finding a cure. I encourage you to join us in this effort. We Appreciate Your Support Thank you for fulfilling your pledges as we focus on debt repayment. One of our new board members, Byron Stigge '64, has taken the lead on our next improvement project: lawn and landscaping. Watch for the transformation in the upcoming year. I hope you will take the time to stop by the Shelter, tour the facility, and talk with the undergraduates. Much has been achieved and I know with your help we will be able to achieve even more!
