Alpha Legend Defined by page 3) Success (Continued from Dolibois retired from Miami in 1981 and accepted the nomination from President Ronald Reagan as U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg. He became the first naturalized American citizen to become ambassador to his native country. "As I became active in later years as district chief and scholarship commissioner of Beta, I developed friendships with men like Senators Richard Lugar, John Warner, and Jim Martin. When I was nominated for the ambassadorship to Luxembourg, men like these supported my appointment and gave full support." The Beta connection had served Dolibois well once again. When I asked Dolibois to specifically reflect on how Beta has impacted his life, he shared, "The Betas who influenced my career progression may be too numerous to mention. My life in the military during the war as an officer, and then 34 years as an administrator at Miami University, ending with five years as an American ambassador, were possible only because of what I learned with challenges that began during the leadership tests endured during the Miami/Beta years." In a day and age when it is so common for us to begin our affiliation with Beta in the past tense ("I was a Beta at Miami"), Dolibois continued to speak of his Beta experience in the present tense throughout our conversation. He shared,"I strongly believe in the fact that you are a Beta all your life, and to truly enjoy your Beta affiliation you should be active in the fraternity—the friendship, the association, mutual assistance, and the benefits of it. Being active in your alma mater definitely includes your fraternity association." As our conversation began to wide down, Dolibois said he had something to show me. In his kitchen, alongside an array of photos showcasing his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, he keeps a framed quote by Robert Frost. He walks me over and asks me to read it aloud. "The woods are lovely, dark and deep/But I have promises to keep/And miles to go before I sleep." As I finish, I glance his way. His eyes betray him; his thoughts are elsewhere. "I love to reflect on those words," he says, as if to himself. With 94 years of stories to tell, Dolibois could simply spend his days captivating audiences with tales. But the great lion of Beta refuses to rest on his laurels. The future commands his focus. Alpha Chapter House Company P.O.
