The Buckeye Phi Psi

B
ack despite little demand (none), the
column featuring in-depth interviews,
well-researched facts and factoids, and
testaments to The Queen's English (particularly
punctuation) is back! Let's dive right in!
The undergraduate Chapter membership stands
at 119! Yes, you read that correctly. The latest
pledge class had 43 members. How does anyone
govern such a group of young men without help
from the U.S. Army? Only time will tell. The
spring GPA was 3.12 and the yearly cumulative
is 3.22. Chips off the old blocks! The pin
numbers are now in the 2400s (mine is 1032).
The University has changed from the quarter
system to three semesters. I see that President
E.G. Gee was given (earned) a $5.8 million,
five-year send-off package which includes a
tenured law school professorship. I expect to see
him teaching Fundraising 301 (arm twisting,
naming rights, NetJets travel, etc.). That is,
of course, together with his real job, which is
fundraising at which he excels! Best wishes to
Dr. Gee!
Are you sitting down? The Chapter has NO
accounts receivable. Being hard driven and
incredulous, I inquired and inquired. I received
the same answer. None, zippo, nada. The reason
is a great board, alumni, Chapter leadership, and
OMEGA FINANCIAL! OmegaFi handles all
of the collections and payables for a two percent
fee. No tickee, no laundry (or room and board or
anything else). Maybe new is good after all.

So the Chapter proceeds are on firm financial
feet with the Chapter House refurbished and
the Honors Lodge rehabbed this summer. The
fundraiser was a smashing success although
buffeted somewhat by the recession/depression.
Many thanks again to Mike Leymaster '60,
Al Sutton '75, and the many brothers who
contributed mightily. Special mention goes to
Rocky Frost '46 (deceased) and to Gib Reese '47
and his wife, Lou, for the large financial backing.
On the construction side, special mention to
Dave Timmons '49 and Bob Hamilton '98
for their expertise and countless hours spent
working on the renovations. Much thanks also to
stalwarts like Bill Black '50 and Pat Doyle '43.
Please remember the National Foundation when
making your charitable gifts. You can designate
Ohio Delta and the gift is tax deductible. Besides
Jim Miller '85 serving as national president, we
have Fred Hegele '63 and Guy Spriggs '71
serving on the Foundation board. Ohio Delta
awarded nearly $100,000 in scholarships this
year! With your gifts to the Foundation, you are
fostering a great education and future for our
young men, not just more effluent.
ATTENTION: The Friday noon luncheon
has switched locations. Please confirm with
someone involved with the event to ensure you
are headed to the right spot.
Tracy Higginbotham '87 and his wife, Laura,
have been getting a lot of publicity lately. The
Columbus Dispatch ran a great article about
their new winery and restaurant at Buckeye
Lake. How many remember the great times
they had at Buckeye Lake? And how many
remember their parents not letting them go?
Look up the hours and go see Tracy and Laura.
Gordon Gough '97 and the House Corporation
board continues to do great work. The house
would be a far different place without constant
alumni oversight. Your investment is being
tended and preserved. A special thanks to Chris
Fahey '08, who is the chairman of the Facilities
Committee. He has served throughout the
renovations and was house manager for four
years. Yes, you read correctly. (G.T. Simon
'61—you out there?) House Board Award:
Byron Gustin '63 travels from Cincinnati to
do his board work!
And lastly, from the world of amateur sports,
OSU fired the men's fairly successful hockey
coach and its women's basketball coach, Jim
Foster. Coach Foster won six Big Ten titles,
made 10 NCAA appearances, is in the Women's
National Hall of Fame, and has a 279-82
record. Almost all of his players graduated. His
successor was hired at $850,000 per year, plus
a $700,000 signing bonus, plus incentives. I
still haven't read who is paying his buyout of
$1,750,000 but I have a suspicion. Minnesota
fired men's basketball coach Tubby Smith
($700,000) and hired Rick Patino's son(!) for
$1,100,000. Big time college athletics can't
keep up the charade much longer.
