The Husker Sig SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA Fall 2013 T Inside: 2-3 Thank You, Loyal Brothers and Friends 4 Alpha Epsilon Receives Bell Award 5 My View: Alumni Musings 7 Alumni Update ALPHA EPSILON BENEFICIARY OF RECORD CAPITAL CAMPAIGN he Alpha Epsilon capital campaign, Restoring Our Sigma Chi Foundations: Pride / Principles / Performance, concluded on June 30, with record results. Thanks to the support of 281 loyal Sigs, our total reached $2,678,881. The renovation to the Chapter House is complete and this unprecedented generosity made this huge project a reality. On behalf of the campaign committee, I extend a sincere thank-you for your role in making this dream come true! Your contributions and support have been instrumental in creating a renewed sense of purpose for Alpha Epsilon. We are convinced that the foundation of the Chapter is stronger than it has been in years and well positioned for future growth and achievement. The benefits from a campaign such as this are far-reaching. The connections and reconnections that Sigs from all generations have enjoyed are especially gratifying. We have had the opportunity to reconnect, catch up, relive old stories, and come together to celebrate our success. As chairman, I wish to thank all of you who assisted with this endeavor: members of the Campaign Committee, Building Corporation, Class Leaders, Advisory Board, and the Alumni Chapter were all vital to our success. Equally important were you brothers who simply picked up the phone to call a brother you had not talked with in a long time to encourage participation. These connections and renewed feelings of brotherhood are true gifts. Alpha Epsilon Charges Forward with Promising New Members I t is often said that the lifeblood of the undergraduate Chapter is directly correlated to its ability to attract top quality new members. Despite the real and obvious challenges imposed upon Alpha Epsilon by the University during this period of suspension, our active Chapter has done nothing less than an outstanding job of attracting quality new members. Significantly, they have had successful recruitment events that are alcohol-free. On the road to steadily building to our capacity in our newly renovated Chapter House, the obvious temptation would have been to lean toward quantity at the expense of quality. However, with the encouragement from alumni leadership and the Chapter Advisory Board, our undergraduates worked long and hard to bring new members in who promise to be a credit to Sigma Chi and the University of Nebraska. As The Husker Sig goes to press, we have 15 new members signed and are optimistic about having another five or six commitments for the fall term. Even without considering the competitive environment, the restrictions placed on us by the (Continued on page 4) Thanks to our generous donors, our undergraduate brothers have a nice, updated facility that suits their needs and helps them to recruit the best and brightest. We encourage you to visit the house and share your memories of Sigma Chi and your days in Lincoln. The undergraduates will welcome you, thank you for your contributions, and love to hear your stories. While this major campaign—the largest in the history of Alpha Epsilon—has concluded, your donations and support remain critical! If you have made a pledge that is not completed, please make sure that you stay up to date. You will continue to receive payment notices on your schedule. Those payments and all other donations may be sent to Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi, P.O. Box 95141, Lincoln, NE 68509-5141. I am very proud to have been selected to lead this capital campaign. As you know, there were significant uphill challenges along the way, but we not only persevered, we thrived in the best of Sigma Chi traditions. Our 1510 Vine home looks great and now represents the finest fraternity living experience at UNL, which we vowed it would be when we started this seminal capital campaign five years ago. The Chapter House certainly has a new look and excellent updated features, but all our memories of the "old house" will endure. This campaign proves that alone we can only do so much, but together we can do anything. Thanks again for your generous support! In Hoc, Robert L. "Bob" Seidell '65 Campaign Chairman (239) 498-5077 bobseidell1@gmail.com
