Thursday, September 23-September 29, 2010 www.rutherfordweekly.com NINE CRITICAL ISSUES THAT NORTH CAROLINA’S NONPROFITS MUST FACE Many communities fear that the biggest challenges for their nonprofi ts remain ahead of them. With recovery expected to stretch out over two or three years, thriving nonprofi ts must be able to adapt quickly to a new economic reality. “Increased need and dwindling resources are now the norm,” says Trisha Lester, vice president of the N.C. Center for Nonprofi ts. “This holds true for all nonprofi ts, regardless of size, fi eld, or location. Long-standing community institutions are in the same boat as younger, less established organiza- tions. Nonprofi ts, though, are resilient by nature. They are rec- ognizing the issues they must address in this new reality.” Lester offers these top issues that nonprofi ts must face in order to adapt: Accept and welcome the change. Things are not returning to the way they used to be. The faster organizations embrace this, the better off they will be. Reassess board leadership. Resilient nonprofi ts are using this time to re-tool and build a board of directors that aligns with the organization’s future, not its past. Board members that are not actively engaged in the organization can be thanked for their service and rotated off the board. Enhance collaboration. Nonprofi ts must revisit their cur- rent and prospective partnerships, choosing partners care- fully to be sure they enhance their organizations’ impact and effi ciency. Plan for short-term strategies and potential scenarios. Re- maining nimble and fl uid is essential. The strongest nonprofi ts adapt by experimenting and revising as necessary – and by not holding anything sacred. Seek continued innovation. For more than a century, non- profi ts have been our society’s innovators in addressing needs in the community. Continued innovation is vital. Organizations that also apply innovative approaches to their own gover- nance, management, and operations will likely be able to have more impact. Connect and learn. It’s crucial in this environment to avoid working in a silo. Organizations are achieving this through pro- fessional networks and resources available to nonprofi ts. Demonstrate results. Nonprofi ts must be able to show their communities what is different because of their work. This in- cludes keeping donors informed of the impact of their sup- port. Speak up. Nonprofi ts have a responsibility to share what they know from their fi rsthand experience about what works – and does not work – in local communities. They can help policymakers address the root causes of problems. Policy- makers cannot ignore a nonprofi t sector that provides more than 400,000 jobs in North Carolina and puts $31 billion back into its economy each year. Be accountable. Just following the law can be diffi cult with constant changes in the federal and state laws that govern nonprofi ts. As with all sectors of society, a handful of nonprof- its doing the wrong things can damage the public’s view of all nonprofi ts. On September 29-30, the N.C. Center for Nonprofi ts will gather more than 800 leaders from the nonprofi t, business, and government sectors to addresses these critical issues. The summit – “Nonprofi ts in a New Reality” – will be at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Research Triangle Park. Additional informa- tion is available at www.ncnonprofi ts.org/conference.asp.
