If you don’t know where you are going, you will wind up some- where else! ~Yogi Berr. Scoundrels, Rogues and Heroes of the OLD NORTH STATE! "Indian Chief" Was North Carolinian Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance became a legend. He outran the famed Jim Thorpe, turned down a rare pres- idential appointment to West Point, became a hero in World War I, won fame as a Canadian journalist, received good reviews for his lead in a motion picture and was called by Irvin S. Cobb the "Beau Brummell of Broadway." When he shot himself to death in Los Angeles in 1932, Long Lance probably hoped to carry his secret to his grave. But Assistant Professor Donald B. Smith of the University of Calgary uncovered the truth: Long Lance was not the full-blooded Blackfoot of Montana that he claimed to be. In fact, he was Sylvester Chahuska Long, born in 1891 in Winston, North Carolina. Both of Sylvester's parents, Joseph S. and Sallie Carson Long, were part Indian, but in the nineteenth- century South their mixed blood forced them to follow the segregated patterns of blacks, The father worked as a janitor at a white school. Fortunately for his future, Sylvester inherited physical characteristics associated with Indians, and when he was twelve years old, he left home with a traveling Wild West show. From that time forward, he passed as an Indian. Five years later, Sylvester retuned to Winston long enough to persuade his father to sign his application to Carlisle Indian School as a Cherokee. When he arrived at the Pennsylvania school, however the Cherokee refused to consider him one of their brothers. Sylvester never- theless was a superior student and athlete, graduating in 1912 at the head of his class. Among his lifelong friends was Jim Thorpe, who lost to Long in three suc- cessive three-mile races. Long next attended Dickinson College and then St. John's Military Academy, and at both places he earned to make. His record was good enough to attract the attention of President Woodrow Wilson, who offered him one of his six presidential appointments to West Point in 19156. Long declined the appointment and instead went to Canada and enlisted in the army as a sergeant under the name of B. C. Long Lance. He thus took on a new identity, and within weeks he was on the battlefield of France, where he was promoted to lieu- tenant, won commendation for bravery and was twice wounded. For recuperation and discharge, Long Lance chose Calgary, Alberta, where he soon became a reporter for the Calgary Herald. He covered all types of stories, but his articles on the Indian tribes became his specialty. Like no white man, he was welcomed by the Indians, who furnished him with colorful descriptions of their old ways. He was photographed in full Indian regalia, and he wove an intricate tale of his own origin among the Blackfoot of Montana. Later he joined two Vancouver papers, and his arti- cles were carried in large American magazines such as Cosmopolitan. In1927 he published his shocking story, "The Secret of the Sioux" in which he reported that General George Custer committed suicide during the height of battle. The publicity surrounding the Custer article let to a fictionalized book on the Blackfoot. By the time it was published in 1928, the book was advertised as the autobiography of Long Lance and the myth sur- rounding his life grew larger. Next came the movies, and he played the lead in "The Silent Enemy", released in 1930. Though the picture was not commercially successful Long Lance received excel- lent reviews for his part. In New York, Long Lance was described as the "social lion of the season" by one columnist. But his fame was his undoing, for his past soon caught up with him. His family in Winston-Salem had silently watched his success with both pride and resentment. When his father became ill and destitute in 1930, Walter Long traced his brother down in New York and gave him the news. The trip was not in vain, for the soon began send- ing money to help his father. He also helped out Jim Thorpe, who was in financial straits. But Long Lance's new world had been invaded and he seemed no longer able to find satisfaction in life. In 1932 he went to Los Angeles and shot himself to death in the home of a friend. It was discovered that Chief Buffalo Long Lance --- really Sylvester Chahuska Long --- had given away prac- tically everything he had earned. There wasn't even enough to pay for the return of his body to his home- town and he was buried in the British Empire veteran's section of Inglewood Cemetery in Los Angeles. - Originally published March 25, 1981 This tale is from Dr. H. The luminaria candle lighting to represent these individuals is on Septem- ber 10th at 9 p.m. at the RS Middle School track. In recent years we have lit almost 3,000 lu- minarias each year. This year we are doing things a little differently. Our Relay teams have decided to go the second mile by hav- ing a canned food drive. Luminaria sacks are typically weighted down with sand, but this year the bags will be weighted down by cans of food. After the Relay on September 10th – 11th, the cans of food will be donated to the Community in Schools Program and the Grace of God Rescue Mission (Cans should be 11-15 oz. to fi t best in our luminarias). Anyone desiring to purchase a luminaria may do so by completing an order form available online at www.relayforlife.org/rutherfordnc, or by contacting Gail Strickland at 828-245-2156 or 828-233-1735. Each luminaria candle is $10. Those who wish to contribute canned goods may bring donations to the Team Captain Meetings or drop in the Purple Boxes placed at businesses throughout the county. The Relay will kick off at 6 p.m. Friday, September 10th, with the of- fi cial cancer survivors’ lap. Following the ceremonial fi rst lap, the rest of the participants will join in, designating team members to take part at various intervals so that at least one team member is walking the track at all times during the night until the closing ceremony Saturday morning, September 11th. Luminarias are those glowing bags, that to the naked eye appear to be nothing more than paper sacks fi lled with sand and candles. ... But upon closer examination these sacks represent more. The paper sack represents our thick skin– what you need when you hear a cancer diagnosis. The sand (this year canned food) offers us a fi rm foundation when we feel weak and falter. The candle is as solid as a rock. It’s what our caregivers, family, friends, doctors and nurses are to us. The fl ame is the light of hope that a cure will be found before more luminaria are lit. It’s the burning desire in each of us to extinguish cancer now. When the sun goes down, hundreds of luminaria light the way under the stars. TOTALLY REMODELED TO PEFECTION...
