Saturday, August 24, 2013 – Daily News 5A Agriculture farm & ranch Rancher home and walking after surgery I talked to local cattle rancher Dusty deBraga and he is home after surgery on his back following the headon collision with a driver on his side of the road in Lassen County on July 29. Glad to hear that he is walking. Had expected the collision was on the sharp turn at the foot of Fredonyer Summit, but Dusty said it was just east of our mountain place on the curve where our neighbor has a mobile home by Willard Creek. *** Cathy Tobin, Jeannie Smith and I were selling tickets for Sept. 21 Beef 'N Brew during the Tap into Tehama festiviCourtesy photo ties at Red Bluff City Above: First Love Tattoo had delicious beef kabobs as appetizers at Park last Saturday. At Cone Kimball Bump in raisin crop expected this year in Calif. FRESNO (AP) — Federal agriculture officials say raisin production in California's Central Valley is on track for a big increase this year due to favorable weather conditions. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is forecasting that the region will produce 2.4 million tons of raisintype grape varieties in 2013, up nearly 26 percent from 2012. It will be the largest harvest since 2008. The Central Valley's raisin industry has seen a steady production decline in recent years, as farmers yanked their vineyards in favor of almond trees and other crops. The number of acres of raisins planted dropped from 280,000 in 2000 to 209,000 in 2011. About 200,000 acres are expected this year, but more grapes are forecast to grow on each vine, bumping up production. Fruit fly quarantine in Orange, LA counties SACRAMENTO (AP) — State officials have declared an oriental fruit fly quarantine in a 130-mile zone of Orange and Los Angeles counties. The California Department of Food and Agriculture said Aug. 14 the pests have been detected in parts of Anaheim, Artesia, Cerritos and other areas. Trained workers will treat areas with pesticide, which attracts and kills male flies. The fruit fly is known to target more than 230 types of fruit, vegetables and plants. The female fruit fly lays eggs inside fruits and vegetables, and maggots eat their way out, making them unfit for consumption. Oriental fruit flies commonly infest urban and suburban areas by hitchhiking in fruits and vegetables illegally smuggled from infested regions, including much of Southern Asia.
