Taizé worship offered in Red Bluff Taizé worship, an ecumenical service combining prayer, hymns and contemplation, resumes at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Services will continue on the first Sunday of the month through Nov. 3, at which time Taizé will be offered weekly during Advent. The Taizé Prayer services are ecumenical in nature, promoting Christian unity in representing the whole body of churches. Welcoming those of any denominational background, Taizé Prayer places all believers in a sense of communion together, praying on behalf of others and the world. What is Taizé? The distinguishing marks of Taizé worship are three-fold and incorporate repetition, silence and music. What is unique to the prayer of Taizé is the adaptation of the repetitive form to simple musical lines and core biblical texts that can be sung by a whole assembly of various nationalities, languages, and denominations. Worshippers immerse themselves in the simple but profound harmonies and allow themselves to be carried by this sung prayer. Worship first incorporates chanting meditation. "The words awaken the soul with a kind of sacred music and allow it to enter a deeper truth," says Carolyn Myss, author of Entering the Castle. Repetition is an important part of Taizé worship because the service is about contemplation and being in touch with God and the worshipper's spirituality. Repetitive prayers have historically been used in liturgy and hymns, which Taizé emphasizes. According to the official Taizé Community, the repetitive songs allow people to continue to pray the songs in their heads even after the service is over. This keeps prayer going all day long in the followers' minds and hearts. The second portion of Taizé worship includes a passage of scripture read aloud followed by a time of personal reflection and silence. While worship services rely on song, silence is also an important part of Taizé services. At planned times the music ceases and allows the congregation to think about what they have just been singing and saying. "It is simply holding oneself in a presence and letting Christ, through the Holy Spirit, pray in us," according to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Sometimes these silences last around ten minutes, which gives people a chance to reflect and then culminates in intercessory prayer and more song. The music is simple in Taizé worship, focusing on simple eight-bar phrases. The singing is more like a chant than a melodious song. Psalms are often sung as songs in the services along with other hymns, sometimes in Latin. Simple, powerful phrases are focused on and repeated to aid with the meditation. Essentially, the lack of complex songs allows people to focus on what they are saying and not what is coming next. St. Peter's is located at 510 Jefferson Street, on the corner of Jefferson and Elm streets. For more information please contact 527-5205 or stpeters@sbcglobal.net.
