1B Sports Cain goes on disabled list with injured forearm SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Right-hander Matt Cain has been placed on the 15-day disabled list a day after being hit in the pitching arm on a line drive from Pittsburgh's Gaby Sanchez. Cain departed in the fourth inning of a 10-5 loss to the Pirates on Thursday. X-rays on Cain's bruised forearm were negative. He was hit when Weekend August 24-25, 2013 Suzuki returning to A's Sanchez led off the fourth with a groundout. Trainer Dave Groeschner and manager Bruce Bochy hustled out to check on the pitcher, who walked off the mound on his own moments later. Cain allowed three runs and seven hits in 3 1-3 innings. With the Giants out of the playoff race, there will be no reason to rush Cain back. He is 8-8 with a 4.43 ERA this season in 26 starts over 156 1-3 innings. Connecticut beats Washington 14-13 at Little League World Series SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — Chad Knight said he was on edge. It never showed as he laced the biggest hit of his young life. Knight lined a run-scoring single to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Westport, Conn., beat Northwest champion Sammamish, Wash., 14-13 in a wild game Friday to earn a spot in the U.S. championship game at the Little League World Series. ''I went to the plate and I was a little nervous, but then I realized it was just any other at-bat,'' Knight said. ''I just had to go out and put the ball in play. If we didn't score, I knew Alex (Reiner) would get the next three outs and we would score in the eighth inning.'' Connecticut beat Sammamish for the second time in a week to advance to play Chula Vista, Calif., on Saturday for a berth in the title game. Tijuana, Mexico, will face Tokyo for the international title. The World Series championship is Sunday. That crushing nine-inning loss to Chula Vista on Wednesday night was quickly forgotten when Knight's ball landed safely, setting off a wild celebration near the pitcher's mound at Howard J. Lamade Stadium. OAKLAND (AP) — The Oakland Athletics acquired catcher Kurt Suzuki from the Washington Nationals on Friday. The move boosts an injury situation at the position, bringing back a former fan favorite just more than a year after trading him. The A's are sending Class A starter Dakota Bacus to the Nationals in the swap, while Washington is paying $995,000 to Oakland as its portion remaining on Suzuki's 2013 salary. He left Chicago where the Nationals were playing and was set to join Oakland in Baltimore for a weekend series with the Orioles. ''It feels good,'' Suzuki said in the A's clubhouse. ''I'm shocked to say the least. I mean I couldn't be happier to come back where it all started and help this team get into the playoffs.'' He did, however, like playing in Washington. That made leaving a little bit more difficult. ''It's bittersweet,'' Suzuki said. ''I wouldn't say glad for a change of scenery. I enjoyed my time there. Send to me to a place with a chance to win, and I'm all in.'' The defending AL West champion A's began the day 2 1/2 games back of Texas in the division race. Suzuki, selected by the A's in the second round of the 2004 draft, spent parts of the past two seasons with Washington after six in Oakland. He's batting .222 with three homers and 25 RBIs in 79 games. Suzuki, originally traded to the Nationals on Aug. 3, 2012, fills a need for the pennant race. John Jaso has a concussion and Derek Norris broke his left big toe Tuesday, and was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday. The move is retroactive to Wednesday. ''He's terrific,'' A's manager Bob Melvin said of Suzuki. ''The tough part about replacing a catcher as far along as the season we are, is the transition period with the pitchers. ''So, this one is an easy one. He's knows most of our guys — a team leader, always has been. I don't know if the front office could get a better guy for us.'' Suzuki is expected to start Saturday. Norris was batting .232 with eight homers and 26 RBIs. Jaso could miss the remainder of the season with lingering concussion symptoms. He took a ball off his mask July 24 at Houston and complained of a headache. Initially, Jaso was placed on the seven-day concussion list the following day, then transferred to the 15-day disabled list on Aug. 8. Pittsburgh-based concussion expert Dr. Micky Collins doesn't expect the concussion to end his career. Jaso is batting .271 with three homers and 21 RBIs in 70 games. The San Francisco Chronicle first reported the Suzuki trade. Wallace getting a chance to compete for backup job SANTA CLARA (AP) — Seneca Wallace stepped on the practice field for the first time with the San Francisco 49ers on Friday as the most experienced quarterback on the roster. Whether the nine-year veteran still has a job with the team in two weeks depends on how quickly and how well he can pick up and fit into a system friendly to his skills. ''I'm real excited to be here and be a part of this,'' Wallace said. ''When you're an athletic quarterback, and that's your background, you just try to utilize your talents the best that you can. The good thing here is that they utilize a quarterback's talents and they're trying to win. That's the biggest thing. If this certain individual does things well, that's what they're going to utilize.'' Coach Jim Harbaugh said he expects Wallace, signed by the 49ers on Thursday, to play in Sunday's preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings. Harbaugh said all five quarterbacks on the San Francisco roster are likely to see action against the Vikings as the 49ers attempt to sort out their uncertain backup situation behind starter Colin Kaepernick before the regular season begins. Kaepernick, who has played only San Francisco's first offensive series in each of the team's two preseason games, will start again against the Vikings. ''We'll split it up after Kap four ways,'' Harbaugh said. The 49ers are anxious to get a look at their new quarterback. Wallace was released Monday by the New Orleans Saints. ''The fact that you can get an experienced quarterback like Seneca Wallace at this stage, I felt there was no downside to that,'' Harbaugh said. ''He can do a lot of the things that a quarter- back that can move can do in our system. He hit the ground running and he'll get right out there and start playing.'' The 49ers added Wallace because Colt McCoy and Scott Tolzien have struggled so far during the preseason. McCoy threw an interception in each game, completed just 46 percent of his passes and has a preseason passer rating of 25.3. Tolzien has completed 53 percent of his throws and has a passer rating of 57.0 Seventh-round draft pick B.J. Daniels made his professional preseason debut last week against the Kansas City Chiefs and led the 49ers on the winning touchdown drive late in the game. The rookie completed all six of his passes on the drive, rushed for 13 yards and led San Francisco with 72 yards passing and a 128.0 passer rating on the night. Those three quarterbacks now will share snaps both in practice and in San Francisco's final two exhibitions with Wallace, who has 21 career starts with the Seattle Seahawks and Cleveland Browns. ''You just got to do what you can,'' Wallace said. ''It's just a lot of catching up and grinding. It's tough at this juncture, what with two games in seven days, but we'll put a little package together with stuff that I'm comfortable with that I feel like I can go out there and play fast with.'' While compiling a career passer rating of 81.3, Wallace became known for his ability to make things happen with his feet. He has 293 career yards rushing and is comfortable with the read option and Pistol formations that the 49ers have worked into their offense. Harbaugh made it clear that the 49ers plan to keep ''whoever the best player is that gives us the best chance of winning the game as a backup quarterback.'' San Francisco will cut down its roster to 53 players after Thursday's exhibition finale at San Diego. Vin Scully to return to Dodgers booth in 2014 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Vin Scully, one of baseball's most beloved broadcasters, will return to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a record 65th season in 2014. ''I can tell you from the bottom of my heart that I have always felt that I am the most ordinary of men who was given an extraordinary break of doing what I love to do at a very early age,'' Scully said on Friday. ''I pray that I'll be allowed to do it for at least one more year. ''As far as I'm concerned, it could have been one line in the note sheet tonight. But I don't take any of it for granted in any way, shape or form. I know that this miracle was given to me, and I could lose it in 30 seconds between the time I leave here and go up to the booth. I'm just so blessed to be doing what I love to do and full of thanks.'' The 85-year-old Scully said he is quite impressed by what the new ownership group has brought to the Dodgers, along with the energy fans are creating at the ballpark. The club has surged from last place in the NL West to a lead of 9 1-2 games. ''I do think that the suc- cess of the team had something to do with it,'' Scully said. ''These last 50 games, coming to the ballpark and watching them pull out some miraculous victories, it was so thrilling — even for someone who had seen however many games I've seen before. Scully began his professional baseball broadcasting career in 1950 with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
