Page 24 - Rutherford Weekly KENNETH NETH BYRD RAY BYR Kenneth Ray Byrd, age 60, of Mooresboro, NC, passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2013. Kenneth was born October 13, 1952 in Clarksville, Arkansas to the late Kimsey Byrd and Clara Midkiff Byrd. He was a graduate of East High School, class of 1971 and earned an Associate's Degree in Auto Mechanics from Isothermal Community College. He worked for Cone Mills for twenty-seven years and had the distinction of being the first ASE Certified Mechanic in all fields in Rutherford County. He loved country music and was drummer in several local bands. He was fun loving and was always giving to others. He often joked about being the prototype for "Duck Dynasty." In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Geneva Kim Byrd. Survivors include his wife of thirty-nine years, Joanne Byrd; daughter, Anita Beaird and husband, Chris of Kings Mountain; son, Richard Byrd of Forest City; brother, Karl Byrd of Ellenboro; sister, Lois Farris of Clover, SC. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Austin Byrd and Mason Beaird. Funeral services were conducted at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Scott Butler officiating. Interment followed in the Cliffside Cemetery. Harrelson Funeral and Cremation Services is caring for the family of Mr. Byrd. KATHY SISK FOWLER Kathy Ray Sisk Fowler age 58, of Union Mills, NC passed on August 13th 2013. A native of Cumberland County, Kathy was the daughter of the late Ray Daniel Sisk and Ester Lee Hardin Sisk. She was a homemaker and a member of Main Street Baptist Church. L A U R A BRANCH QUEEN L a u r a B r a n c h Queen, age 96, of Chase Community passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2013 r. Laura was born September 10, 1916 in Spartanburg County, SC to the late Charles Wesley Branch and Esther Buchanan Branch. She was a homemaker and the widow of the late William "Roscoe" Queen. She was a dedicated member of Floyd's Creek Baptist Church since 1953 and was active in the Children's Sunday School Department as well as many other areas of the church. She loved her church and family dearly. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Ralph, Paul, Roy, Leonard and Elmer Branch; sister, Grace Morris and by granddaughter, Moriah Queen. JEAN Robert Leo St. Jean, age 89, of Forest City, p a s s e d away Monday, August 12, 2013. Robert was born October 14, 1923 in Manchester, New Hampshire to the late Alfred St. Jean and Florida Poulin St. Jean. He was a veteran of the US Army having served honorably during World War II as a heavy machine gunner in the European African Middle-Eastern Theater Campaign and was awarded the Bronze Star for exemplary service. Robert was a self-employed contractor in the home construction industry most of his life. He was of the Catholic Faith and enjoyed fishing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of thirty-nine years, Priscilla Boisvert St. Jean; two brothers, Henry St. Jean and Leo St. Jean and by three great granddaughters. Survivors include his daughter, Nancy St. Jean Chauvette and husband, Larry of Forest City; son, Robert P. St. Jean and wife, Carol of Cambridge, Wisconsin; five grandchildren, Cyndi Oteri, Michael Chauvette, Debbie Milne, Gary St. Jean and Timmy St. Jean. He is also survived by ten great grandchildren, one great-great grandson and two sister in-laws, Lucille St. Jean and Jean Demers. A private inurnment will be held in Florida on a later date. LAWRENCE "KING" TOLLEY Lawrence " K i n g " T o l l e y , age 86, of Forest City, NC, passed away Friday, August 16, 2013. Lawrence was born March 14, 1927 in McDowell County, West Virginia to the late Lawrence Allen Tolley and Martha Alice Tolley. He was a veteran of the US Navy having served on the Minesweeper USS Prime during World War II. He also served twenty-five years in Civil Service before retiring and was active in the Avery County Chapter of Disabled American Veterans for many years. He enjoyed trains, baseball and traveling but most of all he loved spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of forty years, Philomena Ann Tolley; son, Raymond Lamontagne; daughter, Patsy Flannagan; two brothers, Scott and Benjamin Tolley; three sisters, Vivian Cummings, Georgia Seim and Mat Davis. Survivors include three daughters, Frankie Weddington of Fayetteville, Georgia, Carol Andrea Tolley of Columbia, SC and Melanie Angela Miller of Cliffside; brother, Patrick Tolley of Cranberry, NC; eighteen grandchildren, Miriam Simmons, Bryan Lamontagne, Patrick Lamontagne, Virginia Wilburn, Connie Flannagan, Katrina Smith, Gina Whaley, Lisa Beck, Angela Varisco, Kathleen Rutherford, Amanda King, Jennifer Jernigan, Lindsay Bradberry, Savannah Jernigan, Cory Hinkle, Crystal Hinkle, Nicholas Miller and Ashley Reid. He is also survived by twenty-nine great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was conducted at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Glen Wilson officiating. A graveside service with military honors was held at the Cranberry Cemetery in Cranberry, NC. Harrelson Funeral and Cremation Services is serving the family. ELWYN FRED MCCRAW Elwyn Fred McCraw, 89, of Mooresboro, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2013. A native of Cleveland County, he was born on April 22, 1924, a son of the late Chancey Paul and Eva Harris McCraw. A graduate of Boiling Springs High School, he retired from Duke Power - Cliffside Steam Station where he worked for 36 years and retired as a Supervisor. Mr. McCraw was also a United States Navy Veteran where he was a Seaman 1st Class and serv ed on the U.S.S. Woolsey. He was a Thursday, August 22-August 28, 2013 member of Lavonia Baptist Church and the Adult Men's Sunday School Class, was a Deacon, and was the Brotherhood Director. Elwyn also served on the Board of Trustees for the Cleveland-Rutherford Kidney Association, was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a 50 year Master Mason, Lodge Master for Cliffside Masonic Lodge #460, and was a member of the Oasis Shriners. He loved baseball, camping, and fishing at the Outer Banks. He also enjoyed traveling with friends, gardening and farming; he was known for the watermelons and cantaloupes that he grew. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Amy Winona McCraw; one grandson, Richard Petty; one daughter-in-law, Jane McCraw. He is survived by his wife, Ophelia Bartee McCraw; three children, Linda Petty and husband Larry of Gaffney, SC, Roger McCraw and wife Pat of Mooresboro, and Ginger Burleson and husband Scott of Mooresboro; his grandchildren, Dale Petty and wife Amy of Mooresboro, Leslie Bryant and husband Robin of Boiling Springs, Lisa Hagler and husband James of Boiling Springs, Lee McCraw and wife Kim of Gastonia and Kristen Hamrick and husband Josh of Mooresboro; his great-grandchildren, Madison and Hollie Petty, Addie, Cooper, Jase and Reid McCraw, Cameron, Cory, and Callan Hagler, and Brady and Mabry Hamrick. Funeral services were held at Lavonia Baptist Church with the Rev. David Slatton and Rev. Buddy Morehead officiating. Burial followed in the Lavonia Baptist Church Cemetery. McKinney-Landreth & Carroll Funeral and Cremation Service is serving the McCraw family. BOB HODGE Bob Hodge, age 66, of Rutherfordton passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2013. Bob was a native of Rutherford County and the son of the late Barney and Josephine Hodge. He was a member of the Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church. Bob was a shriner and a member of the Masonic Lodge 91 in Rutherfordton. He operated Bob Hodge Auto Sales in Rutherfordton for 34 years. Bob was a chronic piddler and clinical hoarder and loved to congregate with his family and friends, loved to dance and loved his dog Fudge. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter Morgan Hodge and a brother Bill Hodge. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Barbara Hodge; Two Sons: Todd Hodge and wife Laura of Rutherfordton, Drew Hodge of Rutherfordton, Granddaughter Grier Hodge and Grandson Boone Hodge, Sisterin-law Brenda Martin and husband Jimmy of Rutherfordton Brotherin-law Marty Mitchem of Rutherfordton Two nieces and one nephew. Funeral service was held at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church with Rev. Dennis Tomlinson, Rev. Jerry Campbell and Rev. Don Hollifield officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. McMahan's Funeral Home and Cremation Service is in charge of the arrangements. MR. WENDELL PAUL RADFORD, SR. Mr. Wendell P a u l Radford, Sr. age 70 of Rutherfordton went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday August 14, 2013 while being cared for at Hospice House of Forest City. A native of Rutherford County he was a son of the late Grover Paul Radford and Leah Ann Radford. Mr. Radford was a former truck driver for APAC and also worked in several local textile mills. Left to cherish his memory are three daughters – Carol Lynn Smith, Angela Marie Humphries and Sandra Ann Radford; two sons – Wendell Paul Radford, Jr. and Christopher Paul Radford as well as nine grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Rachel Baker Radford. A gathering of family and friends was held on Saturday August 17, 2013. Crowe's Mortuary is assisting the Radford Family.
