S 1, 2010 .DM. Quartzsite Community Prevention Coalition invites public to get involved By: Samantha Hess, Quartzsite Community Prevention Coalition Awareness & Prevention Throughout the past month, the Quartzsite Community Prevention Coalition has been reaching out to the local community, asking the members of Quartzsite to come join our fight against substance abuse. This is be- coming a rising issue within our com- munity, and the town as a whole must come together to attempt to stop alco- hol and drug issues. As of right now the coalition is work- ing on the issues of misuse and abuse of prescription medications. The per- manent drug drop off site of unused and expired prescription drugs is the Quartzsite Police Department. The coalition is seeking new members, to come up with new ideas of approach- ing our goals of “prevention,” promo- tion of prevention items, or to simply come up with ideas for future events. Gaining volunteers would make our coalition grow, not just by numbers, but by effectiveness as well. During the past few weeks our local kids have been returning to school. This is the time that kids will be in- troduced to many new things, good and bad. There are some new trends in substance abuse problems that par- ents need to be aware of. Prescription drug abuse is the number one thing that parents need to look out for. Be cautious of where you store your cur- rent or old prescription drugs. Store them somewhere safe and somewhere your children cannot find them, lock them up. Another problem on the rise with young children and adolescents is the issue of huffing, which is when children huff from aerosol cans and such. These children get a high off this “drug,” but it can also kill them. Parents, be aware of these things, and know the warning signs that your kid may have been introduced to these substances. Also, parents are always going to believe that “my kid would never try anything like that,” but peer pressure is a huge thing for children and adolescents. The Quartzsite Community Preven- tion Coalition is not only here to at- tempt to “prevent,” we are also here to inform the community of rising drug is- sues, and the new trends that children may be trying. Join us in our fight to rid our community of the specific sub- stances that seem to be affecting us. Please join us for our next meeting on Thursday, September 16, 4pm at the Fire Station. RICE RANCH A-45 East of Dorothy’s Beads 281-635-6496, 281-636-7230 Library receives The Quartzsite Public Library was recently awarded a grant from the Arizona Community Foundation (ACF). This grant, in the amount of $4,400.00 helped us to replace the tables in the library meeting room, replace all the chairs in the reading areas of the library, purchase a new book cart and shelving and purchase media for audio book titles. All of these items will help to improve ser- vice to library patrons. In years past the Arizona Communi- ty Foundation has helped the library to purchase new public access com- puters, printers, shelving, media and supplies. This past year, the Quartz- site Public Library was ranked a four **** star library, because of the num- ber of patrons it served for the size of the community. The economic downturn has made libraries even more important for those who used to buy books but now borrow them, for those who can no longer afford internet access, but need internet to keep in touch with family and friends, or for job search, public assistance or to bor- row DVD’s. A huge thank you goes to the Ari- zona Community Foundation for its continued support!
