S 1, 2010  DESERT GARDENS FROM PAGE 10 But the property had one huge drawback, a very limited supply of water. Around 1940 Bill Keiser hired Roberts Drilling to drill a well. It took patience and money to keep drilling until finally, at 525 feet, he came into a bountiful aquifer and laid a waterline over to Buck’s place. Buck and Hazel later sold their homestead to Ralph and Virginia Underwood who was in the mining exploration business. Bill Keiser and Ralph had a disagreement over the waterline so Bill turned the water off. Ralph had a big blue Dodge Power Wagon onto which he attached a 6-inch auger and punched holes all over the property searching for water. No luck, so the Underwood’s continued to use Buck’s 65-foot hand- dug well with its windmill that pumped around two gallons per hour on a breezy day. Virginia was appointed the deputy county assessor and, among other things, issued marriage licenses and vehicle plates. Then in 1956, while on a business trip to California, Ralph had a heart attack and died. (Next story: My Dream for Desert Gardens - Part 2.)
