Broadway St., Forest City By KEVIN CARVER Pictured left to right: Diane Allen, Tina James, Perfus, Elmer, Chaplain Hattie William and Kathy Tuttle Patsy Littlejohn, the daughter of Elmer Littlejohn and the niece of Perfus Littlejohn, would like to say a warm thank you to Hospice for honoring them for their bravery and devotion during World War II. Elmer is 89 years old and served in the navy, Perfus is 91 years old and served in the army. They were very grateful to have this special moment in their lives. They were filled with tears of joy for being recognized for that important time they served their country. We would also like to say thank you to everyone that came out to make this moment in time even more special for my father and uncle. Thank you to Hospice and all of the wonderful caregivers, Chaplain Hattie William, Nutrition Coordinator/Meals On Wheels Diane Allen, Social worker Kathy Tuttle, and nurse Tina James. However, tonight is the Rutherford County Football Jamboree on Thursday, August 15. If the scrimmage were to be rained out, they will try again Friday. Junior Varsity will start out at 6pm with Hunter Huss going against Chase, then McDowell versus East Rutherford and Landrum is hosted by R-S Central. It will be two 10-minute quarters in JV ball per scrimmage to resemble one half of play. Then varsity will follow with Chase-Hunter Huss, East Rutherford-McDowell and R-S Central-Landrum. It will be two 12-minute quarters for the varsity, which resemble one half of a regular game. Next week, I will preview all four county games that play in week one. On the NASCAR circuit, Tony Stewart broke his right leg in a sprint car crash last week, but luckily doing well at home now after two operations. It's unfortunate since his run at another Cup Championship is pretty well over. Normally, one would expect Stewart to be out for at least 6-8 weeks if not longer. From sources, it seems like Stewart is trying to make it back within a month before "The Chase" is set to begin. I don't really see it happening, but then again this is Tony Stewart we are talking about here. If Stewart does come back early from the injury, more than likely he will start the race and run until the first caution flag of the next two events he enters. Great racing and attrition again at Watkins Glen this year. Honestly, I'd rather see Watkins Glen twice a year, then Sonoma once. Corporate track giant, SMI really screwed up Sonoma years ago. Anyhow, it would be Kyle Busch getting revenge after losing the lead in 2012 on the final ©Community First Media ©Community First Media Not Just Oil, Pennzoil lap to hold off Brad Keselowski at the end in the 2013 version. Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon were victims of crashes and lost four spots each in points. As for the Chase, nine drivers are vying for the remaining five spots into NASCAR's postseason with four events left. It's going to be real close down to the wire from here to Richmond. Still Michigan, Bristol and Atlanta are up before that. The Chase criteria: Be among the top ten in points. Two wild cards are decided by most wins and must sit tenth through twentieth in points. Keselowski, Greg Biffle and Martin Truex are in at the moment rounding out eighth through tenth in points. Kasey Kahne (12th) and Stewart's teammate, Ryan Newman (14th) hold the wild card spots for the time being by virtue of wins. Keselowski looks good to make the postseason, but would feel secure with a win. Kurt Busch hasn't won a race either, but sits 11th overall in points and Jeff Gordon is 13th and without a win in 2013. Biffle and Truex at least have a win to fall back on. Jamie McMurray (15th) and Joey Logano's (16th) chances are fading away if neither can win once or twice and pick up points against the competition. From tenth to 16th in the standings, it only a separation of 27 points and 36 to eighth. And by the way, Dale Earnhardt Jr has run into enough bad luck this season while running up front. It's about time for that change as I really think he will win this weekend at Michigan. Over in the Braves camp, they really haven't let up. Atlanta has won 15 of their last 16 games and sit at a magic number of 31. More impressive, they have 38 come from behind wins this season. I am sure that they will struggle for a week sometime down the stretch, but as long as they find this stride again by the playoffs, I think most people around here would be okay with that scenario.
