In 2020, Arizona became the fi rst state to allow family law legal paraprofes- sionals to practice law. Under the new rule, family law legal paraprofession- als can provide certain legal services, such as drafting legal documents, pro- viding legal advice, and representing clients in court under the supervision of a licensed attorney. The Justices also fi elded questions from attendees including concerns about seniors land fraud from County Assessor Anna Comacho. Justice Timmer shared informa- tion about the elder laws website and hotline: 1-800-231-5441 . They give advice, information, and referrals on a wide variety of legal matters impor- tant to seniors. Funded by the Arizo- na Supreme Court and operated by Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Inc. Justice Brutinel said, "There is no, 'just let them go policy." He explained "Everyone who goes to jail gets a PSA, [Public Safety Assessment] which is a screening tool." The PSA estimates the likelihood that people will appear in court and remain arrest-free while on pretrial release. On January 19, 2023, Chief Jus- tice Robert Brutinel established the Pretrial Risk Assessment and Form IV Task Force through Administra- tive Order 2023-20. The charges of the task force included evaluating the existing use of the Public Safety Assessment instrument and the Pre- trial Form IV to determine if any improvements needed to be made. Members of the Task Force included representation from prosecutors, de- fense attorneys, judicial offi cers, law enforcement, and pretrial practitio- ners from across the state. Quartzsite Council Member Starr BearCat asked about how to en- courage people to not afraid of re- port crimes. Justice Timmer discussed diffi - culty in public perceptions, such as recent teen violence in Gilbert. Tim- mer said, "Arizona actually does have the most robust victim's rights in the nation." In 1990, Arizona voters approved the Victims' Rights Amendment to the Arizona Constitution. This was a landmark achievement that af- fords all victims of crime the oppor- tunity to have a participatory role in the criminal justice system and also extends certain protections of law to victims during their involvement with those processes.
