Epsilon Echo THE NEWSLETTER FOR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS OF EPSILON CHAPTER OF THETA CHI AT WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE WINTER 2024 alumni.oxepsilon.org Doug Small—better known as "Starchy," "General," "Half Moon," "Half," "Round Man," "Small Man," "Smally," and "Dougie." Doug was always there. Seems like no matter what activity or what group of Brothers were involved, Starchy was there. He got along with everyone! One of my favorite memories involves Doug and my wife, Linda. When Linda would drive up from Connecticut to visit, I would see her Datsun B-210 pull into the parking lot and then wouldn't see her for at least a half-hour as she visited many Brothers on her way upstairs to my room. One of her favorite stops was Starchy's room in the stairway; they became good friends over the years. Linda invited several Brothers to a "hat party" at Fairfield U. Of course, that theme fit Starchy very well, as he was often seen wearing his white Fedora! Linda was voted Fraternity Sweetheart, and when she graduated from Fairfield, Starchy drove down to the ceremony with the Curry Brothers and a large bedsheet made into a banner that read, "eta Chi Loves eir Sweetheart." e commencement speaker was Secretary of State Alexander Haig, and security was intense for the event. But Starchy was relentless in his mission and was able to sweet-talk the guards into letting them bring the banner into the ceremony. When Linda went up on the stage to receive her diploma, the guys made quite a racket as they unfurled the banner. And Linda's shocked face and grateful smile made the whole affair worthwhile! We will miss him dearly. In Loving Memory, Linda and Mike Iassogna '82 ______________________________________________________________________________ He was always smiling and laughing, whether he was in on the joke or the subject of the joke. I'm so glad we had one last chance to catch up at Ernie's and have a bourbon and a cigar on his porch. Who knew it was going to be the last time. –Joe "Googs" Gugliemino '83 ______________________________________________________________________________ Sad news for sure. May his memory be eternal! My condolences to his family and friends. –Angelo "Hank" Scangas '80 ______________________________________________________________________________ News about Doug hit a nerve. He will be missed! –Ed Loring '81 Remembering Doug Small '81 Remembering Doug Small '81 Read Doug's obituary at parkermemorialfuneralhome. com/obituary/Douglas-Small Greetings, Brothers!
