I t became clear early in the process of developing a strategic plan that the answer to this question would drive everything else. As an alumnus of a different Phi Delt Chapter, I had a lot to learn about Indiana Zeta and DePauw when I began working with the House Corporation and Chapter Advisory Board on this planning process. I also had the benefit of being an outsider, which allowed me to ask questions of students, alumni, DePauw faculty, and staff without looking for a particular answer. From surveys, interviews, focus groups, and meetings, what amazed me most was how much consensus there is about what makes Indiana Zeta unique. The word "diversity" kept coming up. Alumni from the 1960s to the 2010s described Phi Delt as enabling men of diverse backgrounds to come together and learn from each other. When I asked DePauw staff point blank if Phi Delts today fit a certain stereotype, they said the only stereotype is "not fitting a stereotype." Well-rounded. Genuine. Descriptors like these transcended generations of Phi Delts. An alumnus who was active in the mid-1980s said that while he is not closely connected to the Chapter, "it feels like the same guys" whenever he comes to visit the house. It was recurring themes like these that led us to our MISSION STATEMENT: The mission of Phi Delta Theta-Indiana Zeta is to provide an inclusive environment for men at DePauw to form strong bonds with other men of diverse backgrounds, interests, and personalities—bonds that help them to learn from each other, push them to achieve success in their endeavors, and develop into lifelong friendships. Undergraduate members also expressed a desire to see alumni be more engaged, and alumni wanted ways to get involved that aligned with their interests. Everyone recognizes the importance of identifying the characteristics that would make someone a good DePauw Phi, and this is especially important now as DePauw's enrollment is down and the Chapter competes for a shrinking pool of prospective members. There's also something special about the house itself at 446 Anderson. These common themes came up over and over, and as a result, they became the focal points of the VISION STATEMENT: Our vision is to demonstrate what it means to the best Fraternity at DePauw by excelling in academics, campus leadership, and athletics. • We will continue to be a strong Chapter and focus on continued growth, support for our members, and maintenance of our Chapter home. • We will grow the Fraternity by continuing to recruit well-balanced classes of outstanding men who will leave the Fraternity better than they found it. • We will support the development of our members by engaging more alumni brothers in ways that are meaningful to them and help individual active members pursue their goals. • We will provide a house for our members that facilitates the development of a strong brotherhood and that we can be proud to call our home. We're Excited for the Future— Will You Join Us?! I hope these statements resonate with your Phi Delt experience, that you feel encouraged about the future of Indiana Zeta, and that you consider stepping up to be involved in some capacity. Committees consisting of alumni and undergraduates are working to build on this mission and vision with actionable goals. If you are interested in being more involved, please contact Chris "CJ" Johnston '83 at cl.johnston83@gmail. comtoday. Yours in the Bond, Keith Wysocki '07 Nebraska Alpha
