Once a Seahawk ... A PUBLICATION FOR ALUMNI, PARENTS, AND FRIENDS OF BISHOP SEABURY ACADEMY 2023 FALL BACK TO OUR ROOTS Resilience Is in Seabury's DNA A t the beginning of a new school year, I often have some topic on my mind that becomes thematic for the year. This year, that theme is "resilience." I have become aware in these last few months that I am referencing the early days of our school, when we were located in the country on the eastern outskirts of Lawrence. For our earliest alumni, the early life of Seabury in the ramshackle cinder block elementary school house in the cornfields was depicted as a thing of awe and legend. For those who came after and never set foot in that first chapter of our school, the stories might have become tiresome. For many years, I had become less likely to bring up that old school experience to our new students, but something has brought me back to the beginning. A new, independent school only begins if there are children and parents who have the courage and vision to see how taking a different path—and a path less trodden— can lead to a life less ordinary. To this day, I have tremendous admiration for the young people who invested in a culture and an experience that required more of them in every way...and repaid them with a future of confidence, prowess, and resilience. Today's Seahawks enjoy the amenities of a more developed school, but like their precursors, they step up to higher expectations than their peers at other schools. An essential part of a Seabury education is to be tough, adaptable, and tenacious. We want our children to grow to be strong in the world so they can become dedicated stewards and change agents in that world. To our alumni, wherever you are, we send affection and best wishes. I hope all of our students, parents, faculty, and alumni have a wonderful start to the winter season!
