Delta Tau Delta page 2 Welcome, 2023 New Members T hose three words—"Brotherhood Sustains Us"—appeared many times when Steven Belgeri '08 joined a Delt group chat or Zoom call in recent years. It's a phrase that proved true when Steven and his founding class rebuilt Gamma Tau at KU from the ground up, a challenge that created unique, lifelong bonds among them. "It was such a chaotic, stressful, and (more than anything else) fun time in my life." The Delta Tau Delta Brotherhood also sustained Steven, and many more Brothers, through the struggles of a global pandemic. And it sustains them through times of tragedy and loss—including when fellow Founding Father Austin Welch '08 lost his long battle with illness in the spring of 2023. REMEMBERING AUSTIN Like the rest of his class, Austin loved Delt and worked hard to make sure their chapter was something to be proud of. He served as vice president the same year as Steven's presidency, and they spent much time together that year— working hard and having fun along the way. "More than anything, I remember laughing with Austin," Steven said. "Every single week, whether it was during meetings or watching KU basketball games, he kept everyone around him constantly laughing. We will also remember his iconic chapter uniform: a KU golf polo, Hawaiian swim trunks, and slippers. Now his jokes fill the halls of the Chapter Eternal." Dozens of Delts gathered in April to celebrate Austin's life. He was the second founder and third Brother from that era that Gamma Tau has lost since graduation. "None of us mourn alone—through shared memories and laughter, more than a few beers, and the occasional tears, we always commemorate and remember these friends. Stadler, Karlin, and Welch, you guys are sorely missed but never forgotten." SUSTAINING OUR SHELTER Having served nearly a decade as an alumni volunteer, Steven is proud to see Delt thriving on campus. He encourages Brothers to adopt a "build it" mentality like his own class embraced. "Don't just be a member; get invested in the future: yours, the Shelter's, and that of your Brothers. Build the best chapter you can for yourselves and those who come after you. I promise that the work you put in will come back to you tenfold. Matthew Angers | St. Louis, Mo.
