SEEN AND UNSEEN UPDATES KEEP OUR SEEN AND UNSEEN UPDATES KEEP OUR
HOME FUNCTIONAL AND BEAUTIFUL HOME FUNCTIONAL AND BEAUTIFUL
S
ummer 2023 was a beehive of activity!
Among the "unseen" repairs and upgrades
was the replacement of the furnace in the
basement. Installation of the new mechanicals
required extensive excavation, removal of
old ductwork, and asbestos abatement. More
action in the basement included purging a
massive amount of junk, old paint cans, and
broken furniture. The cleared space allows for a
sizeable, dedicated IT area and storage for study
furniture needed in the future.
The projects that are "seen" were much more
fun! The most immediately noticeable is the
main-floor ADA-compliant guest bathroom
near the Chapter room. It has gone from dreary
to magazine caliber. The color palate includes
stylish grays and cream, luxury vinyl flooring,
a quartzite countertop, a new sink and faucet,
mirrors, lighting, an upholstered bench, and
lovely artwork.
Head upstairs to see that every room has new
desks with portable file drawers and Aeron-
style chairs. They are functional and stylish
and brighten the spaces. Funds from the
Educational Area Housing Grant allowed for
these purchases. We thank Directors Nicki
DeMarais Shaw '82 and Leslie Boley Robbins
'87 for their vigorous efforts to launch this
fund and outreach for tax-deductible donations
from alumnae and friends of Mu Chapter. More
thanks go to House Director Elise Nietvelt,
who joined them with the selection and project
management of the desk and chair installations.
Indeed, Elise went beyond the call of duty,
overseeing all the summer projects and ensuring
everything was in place when the Chapter doors
opened mid-August.
Other moving parts included painting in
numerous areas, replacing some exterior doors,
adding/fixing lighting in bathrooms, installing
cellular up/down window shades in the original
wing bedrooms, adding a freezer in the laundry
room (joining the four refrigerators for use by
resident members), creating summer storage
(available to returning members), deep cleaning
throughout the house, and refreshing the garden.
Whew! Now, we are building a list of projects
for next summer. Please send ideas and consider
donating to the Educational Areas Housing
Grant fund. To make
