A s alumni, it's second nature to share our tales of brotherhood with younger family members—perhaps in an attempt to persuade a son or nephew to go Greek, but maybe simply to share happy memories of our time within the brotherhood. What makes the Maxwell family so special is the lineage of the tales told within their clan. FROM PAST… "I heard various family members talk about being in a fraternity and what it meant to them during their college days," Barry Maxwell HZ0100 shared. "My dad and his brother were Sigma Chis at LSU in the 1930s, another uncle was a Kappa Alpha, and my older brother was a Kappa Sigma." Since Barry grew up hearing these incredible stories, it was only fair to tell his son, Barry "Mitch" Maxwell HZ0887, his stories. From pool and foosball competitions—which were fierce—to pledge exchange with sororities, Barry created his own memories for a lifetime at the chapter house. "My father and uncle, Steve Maxwell HZ0240, were both Sigma Nus," Mitch said. "I saw the values of Sigma Nu lived out daily through these men, who are leaders in their community. Now, my kids have grown up hearing stories about my great memories at Sigma Nu." Mitch shares that his son, Hudson Maxwell HZ1457, saw Mitch's values of love, truth, and honor, ultimately leading him to go through recruitment this past fall. …TO FUTURE While the Maxwells have a family legacy to be proud of, Barry emphasizes that brotherhood is a legacy all its own. is lifetime commitment to support the men that come aer ensures the chapter legacy of Eta Zeta remains strong at Louisiana Tech. Mitch and Barry found that donating to the capital campaign was an opportunity for them to play their part in strengthening the brotherhood—for both their family and chapter legacies. "When I rode by the old house and saw how it was totally destroyed by the tornado, I thought, 'My God, what are these brothers going to do?!'" Barry said. "It dawned on me that I had a grandson planning on going to Tech, and if he pledged, we wanted his group to have a house that they could be proud of." Fortunately, the new house was completed in time for Hudson's recruitment (and his election as commander of his class!). STRENGTHENING THE LEGACY Mitch encourages brothers to view the campaign as an opportunity to invest in the future of others just as others did before. "e men of Eta Zeta that came before provided a house for us. It is imperative that we give back to the young men so they have the same opportunities that we were given," Mitch said. DOING BIG THINGS Barry and his wife, Anne, have a 625-acre farm known as Canebrake Plantation, where he spends most of his time to maintain it, along with their property on Lake St. John. "ere's nothing more enjoyable than riding around the lake with a light cocktail while watching a beautiful sunset." Mitch is part of a sales team for Placid Refining Company and is part of a men's retreat ministry that is helping lead men to Christ. "I also enjoy spending time on our family farm hunting, fishing, relaxing on the lake, and taking trips to visit new people and places." "I believe we have 800 alumni that have not yet participated in the campaign. If each of these brothers would pledge $1,500 ($500 a year over three years), it would generate $1.2 million and lower our debt to a level where the active chapter could more easily handle the note." –Barry All in the Family e Maxwells Share eir Lifelong Commitment to Brotherhood "I feel like I was given an opportunity to experience something that truly made a difference in my life." –Mitch CHAPTER ETERNAL Aubrey Shepherd HZ0012 entered Chapter Eternal on October 14, 2022. omas Hardy Hays HZ0046 entered Chapter Eternal on February 24, 2023.
