2 What Alpha-Phi Zeta Instilled in Steve Russell, AΦ718 BUILDING LIFELONG CONNECTIONS T hough he didn't know anybody in Lambda Chi Alpha before 1966 recruitment, Steve Russell, AΦ718 quickly found connections in the Chapter House. The Chapter president greeted him at the door and, upon learning Steve was from Mobile, introduced him to the only Mobile brother, Bobby Livings, AΦ656. The young men hit it off immediately, and Bobby became Steve's sponsor; they remained close friends until Bobby's passing in 2008. Steve fondly remembers the old Chapter House on 10th Avenue, a great social house next door to Bryant-Denny. He was also there for Alpha-Phi Zeta's move to the current Chapter House in 1970 and was excited to be on New Fraternity Row. Football games, the spring luau, and the White Rose Formal were priorities on Steve's calendar as he grew as a Lambda Chi brother. In 1968, Steve became the Chapter's scholarship chairman, which improved his powers of persuasion and made him a better role model. "The world events of the time made getting the brothers to study hall difficult!" Steve later served as the ritualist, which became his favorite position given the significance of the Fraternity's ritual. "It was especially rewarding when I had the opportunity to initiate an Alpha-Phi brother at the 1969 General Assembly in Dallas." Steve is happy to have spent his working and family life in his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, having retired from the Mobile Chamber of Commerce in 2017. Both of his daughters earned master's degrees at UA and have settled in Mobile with families of their own. "My wife and I spend a good deal of our time spoiling the grandchildren." As an alumnus, Steve has visited Alpha-Phi Zeta for many Homecomings. "I've enjoyed catching up with brothers and seeing the Chapter House evolve into a wonderful home." He also follows his associate brothers and their life updates on Facebook and has regularly seen brothers at Mardi Gras events. A passionate genealogist, Steve is researching his family as well as writing a chronicle of his life ("I have not gotten to the college years yet!") He and his wife enjoy traveling with their family on vacation, a favorite location being Alabama's DeSoto State Park. To catch up with Steve, you can reach him at sr62180@gmail.com.
