WebLinks celebritypipeline By Jay Bobbin Television work was right for Bob Barker Q: I was saddened to learn that Bob Barker died. I know he hosted "Truth or Consequenc- es" before "The Price Is Right," but did he host any other shows before that? – Ron Gordon, via e-mail A: Not on television, but he had his own radio program originating from Southern California, after he had worked at stations in Missouri and Florida. It was while he was working at Los Angeles station KNX – still in operation as an all-news outlet – and interacting with audience members that he came to the attention of television host and producer Ralph Edwards, who was seeking someone to front the weekday-TV version of "Truth or Consequences." The offer went out to Barker, and the rest is genuine television history. Q: Will Derek Hough be back on "Dancing With the Stars" for its new season? – Gail Hackett, Reading, Pa. A: He will, and with a new responsibility, since he'll assume the position of head judge that previously was held by the late Len Goodman. Hough (who's a newlywed) is sure to have some interesting interaction with the hosts, too, since his sister Julianne will join returnee Alfonso Ribeiro to preside over the contest. (Tyra Banks has left the show.) ABC will return to carrying the pro- gram for its new season, with Disney+ continuing to present it as well. Q: I was surprised not to see "Casablanca" as part of the "Summer Under the Stars" salute to Humphrey Bogart on Turner Classic Movies in August. Why wasn't it included? – Greg Prior, Wheeling, W. Va. A: It admittedly was unusual for a Bogart tribute day not to include one of his signature films – though another of them, "The Maltese Falcon," was presented then – but TCM is known for showing "Casa- blanca" very frequently. It may simply have been (and probably was) a case of giving a rest to something that was so expected, but rest assured that the Oscar-win- ning 1942 film that also stars Ingrid Bergman is never too far from its next showing on the channel. Q: I recently saw several TV-movies starring a younger John Larroquette as a character named McBride, but I don't remember them being on before. When were those first shown? – Terry Graves, Sacramento, Calif. A: The franchise, which amounted tok 10 films, was made for Hallmark Channel between 2005 and 2008 – before the creation of a separate Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel, which was where the pictures recently were shown in a marathon. Larroquette played Mike McBride, a former po- liceman who became a lawyer later than most people choose that profession. Marta DuBois played his ex-girlfriend, a police detective who helped him, as did an independently wealthy former public defender portrayed by Matt Lutz. Larroquette also directed four of the 10 "McBride" movies, which rotated with several other elements in a "Mystery Wheel" on Hallmark, not unlike the "Mystery Movie" format that NBC used with such shows as "Columbo" and "McMillan and Wife" during the 1970s. The other Hallmark segments includ- ed Kellie Martin's "Mystery Woman," "Murder 101" with Dick Van Dyke, and the Lea Thompson vehicle "Jane Doe."
