The United States fl ag, espe- cially, should be treated with the utmost care and respect, since it represents a living country and, as such, is considered a living thing. There is a very special protocol in dealing with the United States fl ag. You should always display the fl ag with the union fi eld (blue corner with stars) up- -never display the fl ag upside down except as a distress signal. Always hold the fl ag carefully; never let it touch anything beneath it- the ground, the fl oor, water or merchandise. Always keep the fl ag aloft and free-never carry it fl at or horizontally. Always keep the fl ag clean and safe, and if it should get torn, soiled or damaged, dis- pose of it properly, preferably by burning it. Operation Hero Comfort will be holding a fl ag retirement ceremony on Flag Day, June 14 at 2 p.m. at the pavilion at the Town Park. There will be a special ceremony held honoring the fl ag, and the fl ags will then be burned and the ash- es buried. Anyone who has a torn, damaged or soiled fl ag that they would like to "retire" at this ceremony is welcome to bring it at that time. If you cannot be there, you can drop off any damaged fl ag at either the Town Hall or the Fire Dept. before June 14, and they will be picked up and appropriately disposed of at the ceremony. Quartzsite Girl Scouts will be part of the ceremony, and everyone is invited to come to the Town Park and participate. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony. QUARTZSITE- On May 15th, 2009, Mayor Walt Akin submitted his letter of resignation to the Town of Quartzsite, Town Manager, Town Employees and Town Residents. Letter follows: "This was not an easy decision to make. I am grateful for the opportunity I've had the past seven years to represent those who had instilled their faith in me and to represent them on the council and beign their mayor. "I regret to inform you that I'm resigning as your mayor. I regret the inconvenience it will cause, but circumstances have left me no choice. I have enjoyed working with everyone and have learned a great deal. This letter is because of health problems and wanting to be close to family. Please be informed that I am resigning as of Monday, May 18, 2009 at 12 noon. "Thanks again everyone, thank you, council members past and present for having the wisdom to do what is best for your town and not yourself. I wish you all the best going forward." Walt Akin was sworn in as May- or following in November, 2009, the death of the late Mayor Chuck Busby. Since taking offi ce, the mayor has had to deal with many important issues regarding bud- get cut-backs, recalls, and new council members. "I really was hoping to heal the town" he told Desert Messenger, Monday morning. When asked if he had a statement, he replied, "I wrote seven starts to a letter, but there was so much to say to the community... It was just so hard." Akin will participate in a 8-9 month program to "rebuild" his heart health through exercise and diet in Arkansas. He said he hopes to return to Quartzsite, but "so much is up in the air right now". Akin's resignation left the coun- cil free to appoint someone to fi n- ish out his term. A special council meeting was being planned for Tuesday, at press time.
