And since 2005, The Plaza at Highlands Crossing has been providing a 55-plus independent living community for active adults who have chosen to retire there. "One of our main selling points, I think, is that we are carefree living," said Jan Randolph, office manager at The Plaza at Highlands Crossing. "One of the benefits of living at The Plaza is we take care of the lawn care, all of the outside chores and expenses. We also handle the appliance maintenance, pretty much care-free living is our goal." This senior cooperative is run by its members, the people who live there. "It is overseen by a board of directors, and they all are resident members," Randolph said. "They can really understand the needs of the residents because they know what it is like to live at The Plaza. They are elected by the residents." The Plaza is unique in that it is the only co-op in the state of Arkansas. "Essentially, when someone buys into The Plaza they are buying a membership share in this nonprofit," Randolph explained. "There is a one-time cash buy-in and then an ongoing monthly maintenance fee. Both the buy-in and monthly maintenance fees vary based on the size of your apartment." Residences vary in size from 800 to 1,800 square feet and include living room, bathrooms and full- sized kitchens. The larger units have a den/office. The dining area is a cozy, home-style setting for residents and family members. "In house, we have catered meals by our chef three times a week," Randolph said. "If you want to attend, you sign up and pay at the door. It's great for socialization." Socialization is one of the selling points of The Plaza at Highlands Crossing. "We have a very active community," Randolph pointed out. "We play bridge and have other resident-led activities. We also have a workout facility, plus a workshop. So, if you have some projects around the house or need some tools you are welcome to use them. We also have a beautiful library with many books, plus a DVD library." Of course, the location is the cherry on top. Medical facilities, outdoor activities, shopping and restaurants are all conveniently located nearby. "Residents are members of the Bella Vista Property Owners Association, so they have access to the health clubs, pools, golf courses and more," Randolph noted. At The Plaza at Highlands Crossing, every day is an opportunity filled with endless choices for senior residents to enrich their lives.
