"e Field of Honor is an incredible event, and it is heartwarming to know that I have a way to keep Papaw's memory and legacy alive," says Mehan. Rebecca Canady also spends time at the Field of Honor reflecting on those who have served in the armed forces. "Every year, we look forward to our tradition of visiting the Field of Honor, a place to remember and appreciate the honor, courage and sacrifice of our armed forces," Canady says. "I am privileged to be a military child and am forever grateful for the dedication of my many veteran family members and friends." Canady is the daughter of retired Gunnery Sgt. Colin Smith, who served for 20 years in the Marine Corps. Canady and her husband bring their two daughters to the Field of Honor in part to remember what the flags represent. "As we walk freely amongst the flags and feel the cool breeze whip through the rows of red, white and blue, it reminds me how lucky we are to live in the land of the free because of the brave," Canady says. 554 flags strong Renee Lane, executive director of the Airborne & Special Operations Museum Foundation, says the Field of Honor will host 500 flags on the parade field, with 54 additional flags surrounding monuments and the Iron Mike Circle. "We have people adopting American flags from California to Maine to fly in our Field of Honor. ere are flags for those in honor or in memory of those who have served or who are serving now and for military spouses or children," says Lane. Each flag is tagged with a nameplate, and a guide is placed at the entrance so families and friends can find their flags easily. e display has grown so popular among photographers who want to use it as a backdrop for family photos that this year — to preserve a solemn atmosphere but also accommodate the families — the museum is limiting such photo sessions to two days. Photographers can purchase a pass through the ASOM website for Sept. 29 and Oct. 6. Aer the flags are taken down Nov. 11, Lane says, they will be sent to homes across the nation or donated to the museum.
