Galton Van Sluytman and Denzeyl Morris on Creating "The Student Emergency Fund" to Ensure Colgate Students Thrive (Continued from page 1) Charles "Bucky" Dalton '62 January 18, 2022 Peter Mauhs '54 January 22, 2022 Ken Moodie '81 April 18, 2022 Loren Young Moceri '92 July 26, 2023 Dave Eldon III '60 November 2, 2022 John McGonagle '65 November 11, 2022 Arthur Rose III '70 December 24, 2022 Brothers Crouchy, Doug Wilson '57, and Dave Mackenzie '78. "If we're serious about wanting every Colgate student to thrive, then we should also provide adequate resources to cover the cost of those more extraneous expenses, particularly those costs that create undue and often unseen stress" Galton shared. The highest initial priorities for The Community Fund for Inclusive Leadership and Enrichment are to: Initiate a Dress for Success program: Providing bespoke suits to students who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford them. Having the opportunity to look good and feel good in advance of job interviews and professional opportunities can be a game changer, allowing students the space to perform at their highest and best. Support an annual trip to New York City: Last year's inaugural Men of Color Success Network event in New York City brought together dozens of students and alumni for a weekend of inspiration, networking, and connection. These opportunities can be life-altering for students, and those involved in the fund want to see these opportunities expanded and offered to more students in the year ahead. Fund student-led panels and leadership events: The fund will provide resources for speakers and leadership-focused events in collaboration with the ALANA Cultural Center as well as other offices on campus. "It's important to first understand that everybody comes from a different walk of life," Denzeyl shared. "Then, we must work to create equitable environments that genuinely nurture, support, and encourage as many of our unique talents as possible." Additionally, he recognizes there is considerable work to be done. "I think it matters to hold people and the environments we share accountable for those who cannot enjoy the same privileges, whether it be mental health or fiscal alleviation, that seem routine or that many of us take for granted," he said. By building this fund, he hopes to make Colgate more equitable. Galton views his time at Colgate and DKE as the culmination of a friendship between his father, Gerard "Jerry" Van Sluytman, who graduated in 1987, and Brother Elroy Hill. The two were roommates their freshmen summer, Gerard an OUS Student and Elroy a football recruit. "My dad's close friend, Elroy Hill, was a head, and I've always wondered if my father had had access to more, would he himself have joined DKE?" he shared. "Let me be clear: this fund isn't about getting students more comfortable with jumping into the mainstream. It's about doing what we can as alumni to make students comfortable reaching for the things that they want, the opportunities they want, and the dreams they want. It's about building for love, plain and simple." What's Next? The hope is to inspire support—at all levels—from those individuals whose values align with the general intent behind the fund. The goal is to raise ~$25,000 annually to support this fund. Gifts can be made by visiting colgate.edu/communityfund. The Community Fund for Inclusive Leadership and Enrichment is a part of Colgate's larger Third-Century Plan. 1 2 3
