The Lacher family opened Venice Pest Control in 1974. Current owner Steve Lacher II got his start working for his parents, and is the third generation to have served the Venice community. "After about 50 years, you are sort of dialed in right," Steve said. "You know the environment. You know the area. You end up knowing your job pretty dang well." Steve was born and raised here. He's raised his children here. He loves Venice and he loves being able to provide what others seem unable to offer in his industry, he said. "The majority of my competitors have sold out," Steve said. "What's offered now is a corporate-style thing. I'm just down-home. I'm family." Steve says his brother-in-law works for the company. Another employee has been working for Venice Pest Control since his grandmother owned the business – when Steve was in diapers. "I just want to provide a family-style business to this little town that's growing quite fast," he said. Like many families in Sarasota County, the Lachers' love of Sarasota County grew after just one family member moved here. Steve's father, hitchhiked to southwest Florida years ago at the age of 18 to work for the Army Corps of Engineers. Other family members soon followed. Steve's grandfather worked for a well-known pest control company before getting his license and becoming that company's competitor. Steve's mom and dad took over the business in the early 1990s and Steve became owner in 2020. He has 15 employees and 14 years of Best of Venice. "It's a great area and it's great for having kids."
