discovers that he is from one of D.C.'s elite,
wealthy Black families, and his parents are
not sure that Eleanor is suitable for him.
Although this may seem like a romance
novel, it is so much more. Each woman is
confronted with racism, classism, issues of
women's rights, and parental neglect and
abuse. You will learn a great deal about the
history of this era, which is really not that
long ago.
6. REMARKABLY BRIGHT
CREATURES by Shelby Van Pelt
I never thought that a book about a giant
octopus in an aquarium and a recently
widowed woman would touch me so much,
but this book sure did. Tova Sullivan takes a
job at the aquarium in her town because she
is bored and needs to get out of the house.
She is also still grieving for her beloved son
Erik, who disappeared in a boat accident in
the Puget Sound 30 years earlier. Working
the night shi by herself, she befriends
Marcellus, the octopus — a giant Pacific
octopus, known as a GPO. When she rescues
Marcellus, who tends to escape his tank and
wander around, the relationship begins.
As their friendship grows, Marcellus might
just help Tova understand what actually
happened to Erik so many years ago.
7. REPUTATION by Sarah Vaughan
Emma, a member of Parliament, is an
advocate for female victims of "revenge
porn" and is determined to pass a law
against it. Her stance oen provokes threats,
both online and in person. However, she is
not prepared for what happens when her
teenage daughter inappropriately lashes
out at a high school bully. When a very
aggressive reporter threatens to publish a
damaging story about her daughter and
is later found dead, Emma is accused of
murder. is compelling book shows how
reputations can be destroyed in an instant
— by personal attacks, in school, at work
— on social media. e damage caused is
emotional and physical and can affect our
entire sense of self.
