The company was founded by Fayetteville natives Robert and Alene Strickland in 1960 in their family home. The company is one of the oldest family-owned food service distributors in the Carolinas. Beginning with just one truck, Robert focused on sales and deliveries, with a specialty in portion-controlled meats and seafoods. Alene ran the office and did the bookkeeping. Their daughter, Lavetta, was in junior high school when the business opened. After Robert's passing in 1976, Lavetta's husband, Robert, assumed the role of company president in 1977, having worked in the business for many years. Lavetta joined the office in 1978 after their kids went to kindergarten, and she remains actively involved. Their son Marshall embraced the company's mission. In 2001, he joined the company and has stepped into a leadership role since the sudden passing of his father in 2019. His wife, Leta, is the special projects coordinator. Strickland's Portion Pak delivers a wide variety of meats, seafood, nutrition items, snacks, and more to restaurants, public schools, and private schools. After several expansions, Strickland's Portion Pak still operates from the family home, maintaining a personal touch. Customer service lies at the heart. of the operation. As Lavetta eloquently states, "No matter how big we get, we still want to take care of our customers like a small business."
