WebLinks By Adam Thomlison Q: Johnny Crawford was a great child actor. Can you tell us more about him and his life? A: He had four Top 40 pop hits, he was one of the original Mouseketeers, and he starred on one of the most-loved western shows of all time, all before he turned 20. That's when most of us lost sight of him, but for Johnny Crawford himself, that was just the warm- up. Later in life, he found a new career as an old-timey bandleader, and that, he said, was his dream job. Born in 1946 in Los Angeles to a film-editor father and concert-pianist mother, Crawford first found fame in 1955 as part of the original troupe of "The Mickey Mouse Club's" singing, dancing Mouseketeers. That only lasted a year, but that was actually for the best. Because soon after, he got a better gig, on "The Rifleman," the show that would truly make him a star. He was even nominated for a best-supporting-actor Emmy, at just 13 years old, for his role as Mark Mc- Cain, son of the titular sharpshooter. The show ended when Crawford was 17, and he immediately shifted into music, briefly becoming a teen idol with four charting hits. The singing career eventually dried up, and the roles mostly stopped coming, but that, too, was fine with Crawford, because it let him find his way to his favour- ite job, as a bandleader.
