Raising the Bar T H E C H A P T E R A C C O R D I N G T O O U R A L U M N I A D V I S O R THE INDIANA GRAM TRUE GROWTH I have been working with Indiana Gamma as an alumni advisor for the last year. During this time, I have witnessed active members making meaningful strides in many areas. I say meaningful because so often in newsletters, we can type a few fancy paragraphs and make half efforts seem like something extraordinary. But the men of Indiana Gamma, while not perfect, are putting in the effort to create real experiences that are impactful in service, scholarship, leadership, and brotherhood. OUTWARD FOCUS In the service realm and along with alumni, active members shifted their philanthropy to a service-oriented project with potentially life-saving implications. They held two Be the Match drives, one at ΣAE with the brothers and a second at multiple campus locations. This project saw brothers collecting volunteers to swab their cheeks for DNA to be put on a bone marrow donor registry with the hopes of finding matches that will save lives. They plan to continue this project next year by holding additional drives at fraternities, sororities, and campuswide. MINDS AT WORK The men continue to grow in the realm of scholarship. While the house GPA is solidly in the top quarter of all fraternities, they seek to explore ways to further improve academics in the house. One example of this is through their mentoring program. This program pairs younger brothers with older brothers in the same majors to help with content, skills, behaviors, and habits that will help them be successful. LITTLE 500 Leadership and brotherhood can be summed up in one event: the Little 500. As we all know, Little 500 is a unique bicycle race and truly a tradition like no other. More than 15,000 fans show up yearly on that special day in April to cheer on their favorite team of four riders as they race 200 laps (50 miles) around a cinder track. Indiana Gamma members showed up in force as they watched their team finish on the lead lap and in the final sprint— ultimately finishing sixth out of 33 teams. This was quite an improvement from last year's 13 laps down and 20th place finish. The leadership, commitment, and dedication the team has shown over the last 12 months to rebuild this tradition has been nothing short of impressive. The young team will come back next year as a favorite to win the race. The type of effort needed to be successful in the Little 500 is made possible by the unyielding support of the house. The sea of brothers in the stands cheering on their team is important to the success of the Little 500 team as well as the house. The tremendous show of brotherhood is an impressive sight. MAKING STRIDES In summary, Indiana Gamma is full of excellent young men that have the house rowing in the right direction. They strive to be the best house on campus, and their actions this year prove they are closer to that goal. Alumni play an important role in building and sustaining an organization that helps grow young men into True Gentlemen, and a house that we can all be proud of. If you are interested in sharing your talents to help guide our young members, please shoot me an email. There is always room for a new perspective.
