S E P T 22 HAIL TO THE PURPLE, HAIL TO THE GOLD Harold Vater Hill 1911, from Indianapolis, was born November 29, 1889. He died at age 27 on June 29, 1917. Hill attended UI from 1908-12 and was involved in the University Glee Club and the University Orchestra. The bronze tablet you all may remember in one of the glass cases in the Chapter Room was donated in 1938 by his sister, Frances Hill Arms. Harold Ruggles Green 1913, from Amboy, Ill., lived from 1890-1969 and attended UI from 1909-13. Majoring in civil engineering, he was a member of the 1912 Illio Board and was editor of the Dope Sheet. Brother Green established a civil engineering firm in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which is still in business as HRGreen. On the day he opened the office on March 10, 1913, he was hired to supervise the construction of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, designed by famed architect Louis Sullivan. Green married Stella Wolfe on April 24, 1915, and had three children. As you may recall, Brothers Hill and Green co-wrote "Hail to the Orange," "Oskee-Wow- Wow," and "Cheer Illini;" Hill wrote the music and Green wrote the lyrics. The tunes were written for a musical comedy that was never completed, but they performed them at the post-exam Jubliee in 1911. A local businessman offered $100 cash or one-half the gross receipts for "Oskee-Wow- Wow;" the brothers took the cash. Because the two still owned the copyright for "Hail to the Orange," they changed the words to "Hail to the Purple, Hail to the Gold" and assigned the copyright to ΣAE fraternity. A THRILLING UPSET It was 47 years ago on May 1, 1976, that the Illini men's tennis team stunned No. 8 rated Michigan, beating them at Ann Arbor 5-4. Freshman Tony Chiricosta '79 (pictured) claimed victory at No. 5 singles, helping stop Michigan's 48-match winning streak! Tony was one of five ΣAE brothers on the team at the time. The others were Jeff Edwards '80, Chuck Meurisse '78, Keith Shuman '78, and Mark Wagner '80. Thank you to Chuck Reifsteck '80 for these submissions.
