When to move from a booster to a car seat
Seat belts are made for adults. Children should stay in booster seats until
they reach 4 feet 9 inches tall and are between 8 and 12 years old. An
adult seat belt fits correctly when:
• The shoulder belt lies across the middle of the chest and
shoulder, not the neck and throat.
• The lap belt is snug across the upper thighs, not the belly.
• You are tall enough to sit against the vehicle seat back and your
knees bend comfortably at the edge of the seat.
• You can stay comfortably seated like this for a whole trip.
