14 June 2023 GOOD EATS R emember that new year's resolution to eat healthier and drop a few pounds? Maybe it lasted a couple of weeks and then, you know, life happens. With swimsuit season in full swing, we once again feel the urge to lighten up. ankfully, the local pickings for healthy fare have recently gained options. ree examples are Vibe Gastropub, a fully vegan gathering place where the chick 'n isn't chicken and kale is massaged; Clean Juice, a veteran-owned establishment that churns out cold-pressed juice cleanses, smoothies, acai bowls, sandwiches and wraps; and Earthhouse, a small eatery that features big flavors and promotes the concept of food as a natural medicine. But none of it comes cheap. Organic rarely is. It's not unusual to pay $15 to $20 for lunch or dinner (less for breakfast) and in the $8 to $10 range for juices and smoothies. In the big scheme of things, everything is more expensive these days. And wouldn't you rather consume something delicious and nutritious anyway? It's also far from fast food, timewise. Many items are made to order. While you're waiting, practice patience. Meditate. Or call ahead for takeout. Relax in knowing that you'll feed your body with clean fuel based on plants and smart proteins, and you may just get rewarded with less bloating and more energy. Bring on the swimsuit. Lighten up Plant-based nutrition grows on us. STORY AND PHOTOS BY JANET GIBSON Above right: Liquid energy comes in a variety of juices at Earthhouse.
