1964: At the 16th Emmy Awards, "The Dick Van Dyke
Show" picked up awards in five categories, including
an Outstanding Continued Performance by an Actress
in a Series honor for Mary Tyler Moore. Moore is the
subject of the documentary "Being Mary Tyler Moore,"
premiering May 26 on HBO and HBO Max.
1969: "Midnight Cowboy," starring Jon Voight and
Dustin Hoffman, hits movie theaters across the U.S.
Directed by John Schlesinger, the film is based on the
novel by James Leo Herlihy, and it goes on to win the
Oscar for Best Picture in 1970.
1977: A big day for "Star Wars" fans. The original
"Star Wars" movie, now known as "Star Wars: Episode
IV - A New Hope," is released in a limited number
of theaters. It quickly became a blockbuster hit and a
pop-culture phemomenon.
1979: Directed by Ridley Scott, "Alien," starring Sigour-
ney Weaver, premieres at the Seattle International Film
Festival before a wider release on June 22. Surprisingly,
it received mixed reviews during its initial run, but is now
considered one of the top sci-fi and horror films of all time.
1983: The third installment in the "Star Wars" film
franchise, "Return of the Jedi" (now known as "Star
Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi") arrives in the-
aters. It grossed $374 million worldwide, making it the
highest-grossing film of 1983.
