WebLinks By George Dickie Q: There is a scene with Sam and Joel a hard- ware store in the second episode that sounded very improvised. Was it? A: There's room for improv. That's actually the very first scene that we shot coming back to Season 2, so we kind of stuck to the script at first and then at the end fooled around a little bit. But the joy of writing the sec- ond season is that you kind of have a better handle on how people speak but then we have freedom to move around within that. Q: How is it doing those types of scenes with the actor who plays Joel, Jeff Hiller? A: Well, Jeff is an angel (laughs). He's like a real-life, in-the-flesh angel so it's always a pleasure. But honestly, we hadn't shot in a year. I hadn't really worked since we wrapped the first season. So we were sitting and I was like, "Well, I'm just gonna talk to Jeff like I would talk to Jeff and hopefully the magic will come back." But I think it did. It felt very easy. I just think we sort of fit together like a hand in a glove and it's like a nice, comfortable ride in the countryside. Q: How has the show been received by the real residents of Manhattan, Kan.? A: They've really embraced it. It's so cool. You know, I was home last spring and they did a Bridget Everett Day and so I got to see a lot of old and new faces down in City Park and at Varsity Donuts, which we feature in the show, and see local businesspeople and students and some of the queer community and talk to people and see how the show's affected them. And it was really special and I'm so happy that people can see themselves in the show. Bridget Everett ON HBO celebrityq&a OF SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE Nobody Covers Your Hometown Better! 114 S.
