2023 Best Place to Buy Latino Groceries Chavez Supermarket & Taqueria Beto Chavez grew up in the family-owned business of Chavez Supermarkets and taquerias and has witnessed how the family's commitment to the community keeps customers coming back loyally. "We've been maintaining high quality at every location, even with the ups and downs of recessions or inflation," says Beto Chavez. The business, which began as a meat market and taqueria at the Redwood City location in 1984 has carefully grown to include 11 stores, including nine Silicon Valley or Peninsula markets and two in Hayward. At the tortilleria, fresh white corn tortillas, chips and masa for tamales are made fresh daily, supplied fresh to the stores, including the factory itself. "From taquerias and homemade salsas to prepared foods, we make as much as we can from scratch," says Beto. "Most of the recipes were either borrowed from or inspired by the recipes my grandmother cooked in my father's hometown of Aguililla, Mexico." Beto and his brothers helped their father, David Chavez, run things while they were earning business degrees at San Jose State, says Beto. "As we grew, we were careful to replicate with the same quality from store-to store; our area managers help us maintain consistency," he says. "Our meat director, taqueria director and produce director make sure each store provides the same quality and consistency as the next." In every sense, Chavez Supermarkets are locally focused, privately owned and family oriented. Hallmark offerings include Harris Ranch Beef from nearby San Joaquin Valley.
