Page 2 the sophon Winter 2023 A ttending Michigan as a freshman was much lonelier than Miles Chumley '04 had expected. Being from Texas, most of his friends chose schools like UT or OU, while he decided to move far north to Ann Arbor. OVERCOMING FEARS OVERCOMING FEARS For Miles, Michigan was a time of personal growth. It was the first time he was far away from home and had to learn to adapt to his surroundings. It was daunting; however, the moment he stepped into the Phi Kappa Psi house, he felt a welcoming presence and a sense of belonging. He immediately thought to himself, "Yep, I could be friends with all these guys." Thankfully, the University of Michigan provided students with an experience that simulated the real world. Plus, being in a fraternity that he loved gave Miles a place in the community and helped increase his confidence to take on challenges in a practical setting. CULTIVATING SKILLS CULTIVATING SKILLS Miles attended the art and design school, where he gained the foundation to become a contemporary fine artist. Miles' paintings can be found in the homes of private collectors, hotels, film and sound studios, restaurants, and galleries across the world. "I can think back to many projects during my time in Michigan and how they helped shape some artistic decisions I've made in my work," he said. Through Michigan and ΦΚΨ, Miles has had the opportunity to connect with other artists, and it's been wonderful staying in contact. "My art is all about past and present experiences in my life," he shared. "I would be foolish to say that my time at Michigan Alpha hasn't had an impact on my artwork." FINDING HIS WAY HOME FINDING HIS WAY HOME Since moving to Chicago in 2019, Miles has been able to reconnect. "I couldn't have asked for a better pledge class. I became close with a lot of my brothers and had a blast." Miles and his wife celebrated their child's first birthday on November 11. "It's been an awesome year with him." In his free time, Miles can be found cooking, drinking craft beers, golfing, working on art (of course), ice skating with his family, and participating in all kinds of sports.
