40 Februar y 2023 It's a Greek thing. But let's focus on you — Lindy's, established in 1968. As the story goes, the original owners were Pete and Anna Karteris. Pete Karteris chose the name Lindy's aer the namesake restaurant in New York City, which he thought was some kind of cool. Pete Karteris died too young, but his wife still pops in from time to time. Pete Skenteris was only 33 when he took over the restaurant from her in 2008. Waitress Brittany Mendizabal, she of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Wonder Woman T-shirts, also has been here since 2008. And waitress Tracey Davis "came with the place," Pete jokes, pointing to a collage on a wall that she made with photos of some of the diner's most devoted customers. We've watched as the servers deliver to-go coffee or orange juice to their regulars even before they get to the front door. Especially at breakfast. And it isn't just the eggs and home fries that bring in the generations. Your lunch specials are the stuff of legend, from the Greek-baked chicken to the country-style steak. And on Friday, the perfectly golden- fried flounder or tilapia and popcorn shrimp. e cooks love to eat the classic cheeseburgers on break — and, boy, can they put them away! Spaghetti (with special Greek sauce) and pizza are other winners. We fill our bellies for about $8 to $12, tops. Something else doesn't escape our notice, Lindy's. e parking lot is just as packed at your next-door neighbor's place, Zorba's. It's all about Greek camaraderie. Family; friends: One and the same. Only a narrow strip of blacktop separates you two — and you help each other out whenever needed. Bonds go way back. Pete reveals that his late dad, George K. Skenteris (of Baldinos and then George's on Yadkin Road fame), and Tommy Frangakis, the happy-go-lucky founder of Zorba's, had a bachelor pad off Ramsey Street in their younger days. But we digress … It's all so entertaining. And kind of funny, too, when we ask Pete if anything special is planned for a 55th birthday bash. "We'll be open!" he says, with a smile as big as one of those signature omelets. Lindy's love. It's something to celebrate. Lindy's Friday Special is fried flounder and shrimp. Your red-and-white sign has stood for decades as a beacon of sorts — calling out from the corner of Raeford and Marlborough roads to those craving comfort food or casual conversation in the 64-seat dining room. Nothing fancy, just good.
