JAN. 6 TH for jan 18 th edition Desert Messenger News Email: editor@DesertMessenger.com 928-916-4235 www.DesertMessenger.com "May the joy of the season smile upon you with some giggles, too!" ~Rain Happy Christmahannukwanzadan and I think that covers everybody! Winter offi cially begins Wednesday, December 21st and Christmas is just around the corner! Hanukkah began Sunday, December 18th and ends the evening of Monday, December 26th. While raising my children, we celebrated many holidays during this season. It was fun attending in- terfaith services and hearing unique songs of many different cultures. One of the easiest and cheapest ways to boost your health, your mood, your longevity, and even your success is to smile. Smiles do a lot more than simply let the world know you're happy. Studies suggest that smiling, forced or not, can have a positive effect on your mood, de- crease stress levels, and even make everyone around you feel better. What happy news! You're probably thinking, oh, there she goes again... on another happy tangent. Well, it's that time of year we work extra hard to enjoy giving. to others. This is also the time of re- newal and sharing good news. I've often been accused of not living in reality by focusing on being posi- tive. That's like telling someone en- joying a peaceful walk in the woods there's bad news on television and they should be upset. We all choose our feelings, so why not choose joy? Religions all around the world teach us to show love to all you meet; to forgive others for any harm caused; and to love one another. Besides, smiling is contagious. Studies re- port that just seeing one person smiling activates the area of your brain that controls your facial move- ment, which leads to a grin. Even in bad situations, if you smile, others are likely to mimic the expression. Turn that frown upside-down if you want to make some friends and it strengthens your immune system. So, whenever you're in a stress- ful situation or are feeling down, slap a grin on your face so you can take advantage of the many benefi ts smiling has to offer. Let's make some goals for the fu- ture year- let us: accept each other for who they are; celebrate our dif- ferences, enjoy learning about dif- ferent cultures; treat each other as we would want to be treated; be grateful for every day we're alive; reach out to those in need-no matter what they look like; love life; make mistakes - for that means we're do- ing something new; treat each oth- er with kindness; bring the best of who we are wherever we go; forgive those who've caused us harm; share our abundance with others; show kindness; bring peace to the world. Here's a big smile wishing you and your loved ones a grateful holiday season.
