n August 2022, the Alpha Xi House
Corporation Board notified alumni that the
Sigma Chi International Fraternity withdrew
the charter recognizing the chapter due to past
hazing incidents, which unfortunately continued
into the summer of 2022. (More details are
available on page 2.) Simply put, the Fraternity
closed the chapter due to hazing. As a result,
the House Corporation terminated its lease
with the chapter and closed the chapter
facility at 1439 Tennessee Street for the
foreseeable future.
In September 2022, the Fraternity and the
University of Kansas entered a four-page
memorandum of understanding (MOU), which
set forth additional details about the chapter's
suspension and its possible return to KU.
Neither the chapter or House Corporation
or Chapter Advisory Board participated in
the discussions that led to the drafting and
execution of the MOU.
Highly summarized, the MOU states that the
Fraternity will not seek recognition from KU
to attempt to form a prospective Sigma Chi
chapter or recruit prospective members prior
to August 1, 2025. The MOU further provides
that the expectations for any prospective Sigma
Chi chapter at KU will follow the schedule and
timelines established by the Fraternity and that
the earliest possible date in which a chapter
may occupy the chapter house is the fall 2026
semester. These dates will be extended if the
terms of the MOU are not met.
During this period of suspension, Sigma Chi
will not be registered as a student organization
at KU, and former undergraduate members are
forbidden to display or advertise the Sigma
Chi letters. Sigma Chi's situation differs from
both the Phi Delta Theta and Phi Gamma
Delta fraternities at KU in that their respective
national fraternities did not pull their charters
even though they are not recognized as student
organizations by KU.
As further explained in this edition of Kansas
Sig, we need your support if Sigma Chi is to
successfully begin the process to return to KU
in August 2025. The process of recolonization
will require volunteers to coordinate with
the Fraternity, KU, alumni, and prospective
members. It will also require a financial
commitment to keep the chapter house in a
condition that will allow prospective members
to reoccupy the facility in the fall of 2026. Now
more than ever, we need alumni support and
participation.
