Wade Byrd banded together with hundreds of lawyers around the country with one mission: To represent the families of the victims without any compensation. More than 1,745 claimants recovered $22 billion because of these free services. Providing free legal services in special circumstances has been one hallmark of Byrd's law practice. With over 45 years of experience and after leaving the Cumberland County District Attorney's Office in 1977, Byrd's calling has been handling and trying cases involving catastrophic injuries and wrongful death due to negligence. He is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in North Carolina as well as the Supreme Court of the United States. Byrd has received numerous honors over the years, most recently the War Horse Award from the Southern Trial Lawyers. He is one of only three North Carolina attorneys to receive that award. He is a past president of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice and received the Walter Clark Award, the organization's highest recognition. Byrd is a fellow of the International Society of Barristers and of the American College of Trial Lawyers — one of three lawyers from Fayetteville invited, along with the late Hal Broadfoot Sr. and Walker Y. Worth Jr. These awards and invitations to become a fellow are given in recognition of extraordinary contributions to the cause of justice, including the teaching of trial advocacy in North Carolina and around the country. Byrd has served as president of the Fayetteville Kiwanis Club and was recognized as an Outstanding President by Kiwanis International. A past president of the Fayetteville Academy board of trustees, he has served as president of the Wake Forest Law School Alumnae Association and as an elder at First Presbyterian Church, where he sings in the choir along with his wife, Daina.
