Living Out Our Lifetime Responsibility of Brotherhood (Continued on page 2) Getting Kansas Beta Back on Track T he year was 1982, and like many of you, my time in college was centered around Sigma Phi Epsilon. For me, Kansas Beta took this small-town boy and taught me how to become a man. SigEp taught me important leadership skills, self-confidence, and the courage to do the right thing even when the right thing was not always popular. Simply put, alongside my family, SigEp has been the single-most important variable in the successes I have enjoyed in my life. After graduation, SigEp began to take a back seat and, short of a couple of easy checks, would sometimes disappear altogether. I used my family and career as an excuse to forget the very life experience that provided the foundation and guide to achieving great things in my career and other parts of my life. In short, I walked away from SigEp. I failed myself and my brothers to live the commitment we all make when we signed our bid card: to live a Lifetime Responsibility of Brotherhood. Where We've Been Our beloved Kansas Beta went from being a top Chapter in the country and winning multiple Buchanan Cups to one that was facing multiple membership reviews for behavior that violated our very oath. I was angry with our Chapter, frustrated with the lack of communication, and more importantly, how far our once great Chapter had fallen. I had given up on Kansas Beta and turned my efforts elsewhere. At the same time, our National Fraternity was growing and leading the Fraternity world with innovative initiatives like the Balanced Man Program, a program that eliminated pledging and hazing. This created fraternal environments where equal rights and responsibilities were granted on day one of membership, where world-class and recognized leaderships programs flourished, and where every member would have access to professional mentors. As a National Fraternity, we had set our Vision 125 to Build Balanced Leaders for the World's Communities and have committed resources to growing people, providing life-changing experiences and creating safe environments for all members.
