Page 3 Sigma Phi Epsilon A s a social extrovert, the idea of becoming part of a vibrant group of young men at the University of Florida was very attractive to Alan Hovey '56. "I was introduced to Walt Snell '53 and was informed that he would be my big brother to guide me in my orientation to college life and the pledge experience," Alan said. "What more could a young neophyte ask for? I wanted in." Florida Alpha had a tremendous impact on Alan's career. He found it in good fortune to serve as the Chapter president for two years, gaining invaluable experience developing his leadership skills, public speaking, and the ability to get along with others. "My four-year tenure as a SigEp was important to me; therefore, I always felt an obligation to support the brotherhood." Strengthening the ChApter As a campaign supporter, Alan is looking forward to reaching the campaign's goal. He has made, and will continue to make, modest financial contributions to Florida Alpha to do his part in ensuring the continued success of the Chapter. "One of the goals is to create scholarships for worthy students, and I believe this to be the highest priority," Alan said. "The rising costs of higher education is a shame and is wrong. I'm concerned by the substantial debt obligations that so many students have committed to." To Alan, the future of SigEp is in the hands of the alumni who can help lead the way in providing scholarship money to deserving students. "Think of how great it would be if someone asked about the SigEp Fraternity and you could respond, 'Oh, that's the Fraternity that has many scholarships available to help out guys like you!'" A Lifetime of memorieS Alan's SigEp experience is not attached to any specific event, but instead daily routines that he enjoyed while living together, from gathering in the dining hall for good food and conversation to watching the fights on a 21-inch black and white TV. However, there is one event Alan looks back especially fondly on: the Come as a Roman party. "The Roman party was in full swing when we heard noise coming front the front yard," Alan shared. "A white limousine was parked in front of the House, from which six Gator cheerleaders dressed in white dresses emerged. They created a path of branches leading from the limo to the front door of the House. Only then did brother George Hapsis '57 make his grand entrance from the limo." Alan had lunch with George a few years ago and enjoyed the recollection of his wonderful achievements—some things you just don't forget. pASSion projeCtS Alan remains busy with travel and photography and is on many online platforms. His work can be found on YouTube by searching "Alan Hovey," as well through his Redbubble shop, and his autobiography, Alan E. Hovey Jr. The Autobiography, can be found on Amazon. "My wife, Sue—a former Sweetheart of SigEp at North Texas College—and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary on August 30," Alan said. "We maintain independent living at our home in Ormond Beach, Florida, which we purchased in 2001. I've never lived in the same place for so long a time, so it's beginning to feel like home." Alpha and lost for the second time in as many years. This was the low point in my Fraternity experience, and I wasn't quite sure where to go from here. However, in February 2021, I was selected for the 2021 Tragos Quest to Greece, which completely reshaped my outlook on my undergraduate experience. The Tragos Quest was transformative—it helped me understand the feelings of anger and self-doubt I had felt since losing the election and how to come to terms with an outcome I never wanted nor expected. Being able to experience SigEp on a national scale has been one of the greatest parts of my Fraternity experience and played a large part in my decision to accept a position on the Headquarters staff following graduation in May 2022. 2022 I N T H E S U N S H I N E S TAT E This year, I will be spending all my time in the Sunshine State, providing tailored service to our chapters at Florida Alpha, FSU (Florida Epsilon), and FIU (Florida Nu). Working with Florida Alpha Chapter has been a wonderful experience thus far; I can rest assured at night knowing that these guys get it. Florida Alpha epitomizes what it means to be a great SigEp Chapter, and their successes thus far in both recruitment and alumni tailgates are the products of one of the best Chapter cultures across the country. I am fortunate to have such a great group of undergraduates and alumni to work with. While many members of the traveling staff dread going to certain campuses, I for one look forward to the time I get to spend in Gainesville. Keep up the good work, Florida Alpha. Fraternally, J.J.
