Spicy secrets
Colonel Sanders has been touting his
"secret blend of 11 herbs and spices"
from beyond the grave for more than
40 years but rest assured that salt
and black pepper were two of them.
Probably a bit of oregano, too.
Taste of Home food magazine makes
no secret of recommending these nine
spices that you might never have tried:
1. Old Bay: You know what it does for
seafood, but try it on chicken, pork
or potatoes. It's a blend of 18 herbs
and spices, so no wonder it's so
universal.
2. Turmeric: Adds a deep yellow color
as well as a health boost.
3. Creole seasoning: With cayenne,
onion powder and more, it's got a
little heat.
4. Sumac: Used in Middle Eastern
cuisine, it's tangy and citrusy.
5. Sichuan pepper: Not "hot" hot, but it
can make your tongue tingle.
6. Cumin: Earthy and aromatic, it has a
warm, nutty quality.
7. Cardamom: Used in Indian foods or
baking, it's warm and slightly sweet.
8. Chinese five spice: Combines
cinnamon, cloves, fennel seed, star
anise and Sichuan pepper.
9. Garam masala: A blend of
peppercorns, mace, bay leaf and
more.
